I am getting ready to fly down to florida to shoot a few events that take place over a 4 day period. I'm taking the pictures for a magazine that a friends wife is starting. He happens to be a professional athlete if that makes a diffrence. i believe there are five celeb events that i'll be shooting at. I have no clue how much to charge. Btw She is taking care of the hotel and airfare.

What do you currently charge for one day? What are your deliverables?

I'd say between $5000 and $10,000.

I have to say if you don't know what to charge then you shouldent be doing it

But here's somthing that I use to work out what to charge

cost + what I want to earn for my work = price

Simple right

You should have taken care of your fee a while ago, not before you are to leave. Things I see that are a red flag: friend, starting a magazine, room & board & travel is paid for.

She might be expecting no fee from you because you are a friend, she's starting a new business venture, and she's paying for your expenses to be there. She's almost giving you a free vacation yet you have to take pictures for her too, seriously. ;)

To the "what I want to earn for my work", I would add what you'd pay in taxes for the rate you want to charge. That is one of the "costs" that may be forgotten up front.

Don't forget to FULLY insure your equipment, the whole job (your liability if image files get lost or destroyed, for example), and anything else that could go wrong.

Are they asking you for your fee, or assuming they get the photos since they are flying you in and putting you up? Skip is spot on in terms of insurance.

I'm with this guy...I have a feeling things are about to get tense and uncomfortable between you and your friends.

You: "So I've come up with a price for the shoot...I think $8,500 sounds fair"

Them: *blank stare, dropped jaws* "But....but...we thought you were our friend...I mean we are paying for you to be there and you just have to shoot for a few hours and have the rest of the day to yourself"

hmn, toughie - I'd say approach you friend and find out if she thinks its a freebie or not - just ask light heartedly and assuming you're mates okay he'll just tell you.

Another alternative I guess would be to get some sort of a cut from the profit of the magazine, that way if she's unlucky and it bombs then no cost, if it does well you may get more than a flat fee.

It might do if he's a boxer. If so, make sure you're wearing glasses when you hand him the price.

If you're a pro, you should charge your daily rate...if you're not, how good are you...what do you think you're worth?
Or...base it on how many magazines will be published with your work in them.

The things you do for yourself die with you, the things you do for others live forever.
A man's worth should be judged, not when he basks in the sun, but how he faces the storm.

Not a pro at all but hopefully will be one day. As for price i was offered 1,000 a day and i turned it down and told them 800 a day would be fine. Some people might think i'm crazy but i'm not money hungry and know i will be doing other work for the magazine. Thanks everyone for your help even the ones who made jokes.
