Here is the method I use more than the palm. This is more accurate for me if I don't have my incident meter.

I shoot with neutral picture style, -4 contrast, zero all else. these setting I use with all my bodies.

I then shoot a white piece of paper look for blinkies. I expose 1/3 to 2/3 stops under when the blinkies show. A little experimenting to see what works for you and you'll need to test in full sun on not full sun.

Of course that will work if you have the time to do it. It's the same thing that I did, except that I correlated that reading with the hand reading, to eliminate the white paper step every time.
