Hi, Need to brain pick a little here. I just ordered a 5d MkII and a 70-200 2.8 IS II. I own a 16-35L and have the Hoya HD cpl on it. I want to order filters for the new 70-200, as well as, some new filters for the 16-35. So, here are some specific questions I have:

1. What CPL should I get for the new 70-200? (Hoya seems fine but wondering if there's better in a relative price range)
2. What would be a good neutral density set up be for these lenses?
3. I need clear ones as well for both lenses. Do UV filters work fine in and outdoors?

I certainly don't want to compromise image quality by going cheap. That wouldn't make sense.

Any advice on where to purchase the filters you recommend would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Look at the website www.2filter.com (external link) as they have great prices. Hoya, Heliopan, and B&W are generally regarded as they best and if you buy their higher end stuff you will have good filters. Singh Ray makes awesome ND and grad ND filters and you can order directly from their site. Read the recent Vari-N-Duo thread. Very nice ND and polarizer combo. Pricey, but nice. For cpl, I have been most happy with my Hoya Pro1D and Hoya HD. Very nice stuff. The issue you will have is the larger size needed for the 16-35. That is going to cost you some dough. Read the sticky about uv filters either here or on the lens forum. Tons of great info there about the pros/cons of using them. If you use uv filters, get good ones. I use Hoya Pro1D and HD and can't tell I have lost any IQ. But again, this is worth reading up on. I put a thread on here with a poll last month and the majority use them, but it was perhaps a 60/40 split. Bottom line, cheap filters of any kind are not worth buying. You get what you pay for when it comes to filters. I would start out with a high quality circular polarizer then decide on the other stuff later. The cpl is worth its weight in gold if you enjoy landscapes. The others can wait till you decide exactly what you need. For cpl, give thought to if you need a slim model that will help with vignetting. Also take note that many don't have front threads which means you can't use a lens cap. The Hoyas I have both have front threads. Partly why I chose them.

UVs won't have any more impact indoors or out. For polarizers (in fact, for any particular kind of filter) I stay within one brand; I use B+W MRC for both UV and CPL. That means I won't have to worry about any possible colour shifts between the filters. But since you have a Hoya HD for the 16-35, I'd say to stay with Hoya HD for the new 70-200.

Thanks for the information so far. Is there any issue with combining different filters? For instance, putting a Singh Ray N.D. on a Hoya HD CPL? Is doing such a combo of filters even advisable?

Well, in the example you cite, Singh-Ray filters are rectangular while the Hoya's round. The filter holder for the Singh-Ray grad or straight ND may cause vignetting. Since your polarizer will give you around 2 stops, I would assume you're contemplating using it with a grad not a solid ND though, unless you really need a lot of ND. Stacking multiple round (screw-in) filters may also cause vignetting, especially on wider lenses.

I just got a Hoya Circular PL and a ND8 filter. If I stack them, I should get about 4 or 5 stop. Does it matter in which order I stack them?
