My 10D is on its way. The store was out of stock or forgot to ship CF cards with the camera. I am getting some of the new Sandisk 512 40x cards from Calumet (by the end of the month). In the meantime, I'll be picking up a cheap card from a local consumer electronics store.

I have never used CF cards for anything so I know squat. Do these cards need to be formatted? Is this something that is done in the camera itself?

Thanks

Put the card in the camera. Go the the menu, select "Format" and format the card. Start shooting!

They come ready to use. You can format them in the camera if needed. You can also format them from your computer if you have a card reader (usually connected by usb cable, or an internal device).
They will only insert one way, so follow the camera's instructions as to the proper orientation.
