I upgraded from my 40d to the 7d and I finally got out this weekend and took some pics. So far I am disappointed in my results. Seems like I can't get a good sharp shot. Seems like it doesn't focus well and there is a lot of noise in my pics I think. I had a lot better results with my 40d. These are just some basic shots and shot in raw with a little post processing and then save to a jpeg. I didn't do anything to the jpegs. Maybe there is a little more of a learning curve on this camera. I would think that the basics would be the same. These pics were taken with a 100-400L and the kit lens 18-135. Here are a few links to some of the shots.

That looks sharp too me on some spot! Are you using a center focus or you let the Auto AF picked it for you? Pics, may not look sharp bec. you are shooting it during harsh sunlight.

Looks like it... The 7D does have a little learning curve to it. What was you focus point in this shot? Focus mode used? Worst case maybe needs a micro calibration. I dont think there is a big problem.

There is alot of noise for iso 200... is highlight priority turned on? That will make your shaddows noisy.

Yeah, looks the same. Looked at the EXIF data and got this...

Camera Maker: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D
Lens: EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
Image Date: 2010-06-19 09:26:58 -0500
Focal Length: 100.0mm
Focus Distance: 1.87m
Aperture: f/4.5
Exposure Time: 0.0008 s (1/1250)
ISO equiv: 200
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
White Balance: Manual
Flash Fired: No (Manual)

Looks the same for all the shots, if I'm not mistaken.

That example looks fine to me, don't fall into the trap of looking at 100% as with so many pixels that is a huge amount of magnification - equivalent to a massive print. There are multiple other similar threads about the 7D, there is certainly a learning curve from all I've read but I don't see an issue in that example.

Please refer to the thread "What to do if you suspect a focusing problem" if you really think there's a focus issue to sort out.

Not at all really. The basics of these shots should not be a problem. Maybe it is my eyes going bad as far as sharpness, but I do see some noise in them for a low iso

Try ISO 50 or 100, use spot metering, center focus, higher aperture number f5.8 etc....

Looks like you're using Automatic AF point selection or Zone AF. You can tell because the closest object is where the sharpest focus is. If you use spot focus or AF Point Expansion focus and pin point your subject you should see better results. I also noticed when I'm using AI servo I get similar results where the focus points start to move to the closest part after initially pointing the focus point on a more distant part of the same object.

The majority of these thread are a result of not understanding the advanced focusing system of the 7D
