I am surprised this thread is still going. As I said "It's not free shipping" no matter how you advertise it. If you are paying from your profit that does not make it free shipping either. Where is that profit coming from? It is just because of extreme competition you are cutting down your profit (as every other vendor is doing).

I am done with this thread.

I know more about gear than I know about photography :p

Actually, I disagree.

Not all the items we sell come with free shipping, and those that do, vary from time to time.
That doesn't mean that the unit price changes!

The item stays the same price whether it comes with 'free shipping' or not. WE pay the shipping from the profit element of the item (I think I said that a few pages ago......)

Helen, actually you just made my point. When you said that "WE pay..." that means that the shipping is not free. You take out something from the unit price and use it to cover shipping cost, and by doing that, you are willing to take a lower profit.

Its all semantics, but at the end, there is really no such thing as free shipping.

I was actually defending Adorama in this case, or any other store for that matters, because the moment we realize that there is no such thing as free shipping, there should not be any argument that the shipping (or + handling) cost should be deducted when customer decided to return the item.

I just wish instead of advertising free shipping, the store would just advertise a lower unit price and share it upfront their shipping cost.

For example, instead of $500 with free shipping, why not $500-$25 instant rebate+$25 shipping, I think that would be a more elegant way of doing business. Just my .02

No, that doesn't work. A seller's price doesn't generally fluctuate just because it has free shipping. If something costs $100, it can be $100+s/h or $100+free shipping. The item is $100.

That isn't free shipping, that's the price of the item plus shipping and handling. Free shipping is when it doesn't matter if you picked it up or not.

Oh come on, that is just plain naive...If you sell an item for $100+s/h, how much do you keep? $100. If you sell an item for $100+free shipping, how much do you keep? maybe $85. What you are doing is changing your profit, the shipping still need to be paid by the buyer's money, doesn't matter whether it was part of the unit price or explicitly advertised as shipping.

The same logic also applies for seller who charge the same price for shipping the unit or local pick up, they are just willing to change their profit, shipping still needs to be paid (by the customer at the end).

Logic doesn't apply here, for some users free shipping is real

all those boxes, tapes, white or brown trucks, drivers, planes, fuel, all that runs on monopoly money.

now to be a bit serious. why does this thread is still going?
