When switch from horizontal to vertical position, do you loose the collar ring and rotate the lens, or drop the camera to the drop notch of the ballhead?

Rotate the lens within the ring, that's the benefit of the collar.

Lenses with collars are designed to be used that way to ease the stress of the camera/lens mount. I'd use it whenever provided by Canon. :)

And I always keep the ring ever so slightly loose so that I can easily rotate the orientation while shooting sports.

Thanks all for the replies. That's how I used it however I noticed some paint being scratched off by doing so. I guess that's from "nomal use".

Either use the lens collar to change orientation....or....you use an L bracket on the camera body. We always put RRS L brackets on all our camera bodies. ;)

If the lens has a collar I use that to rotate the camera. With lenses that don't have collars I use the RRS L brackets I have mounted on all my cameras.

I do the same. Tight enough to hold the camera, but lose enough to rotate it when needed.
