Dropped my lens this weekend after shooting an LAX game. Had the lens mounted on a monopod and forgot to tighten the collar as I keep it loose during shooting to change orientation quickly. Had the monopod laying over my shoulder an all of a sudden I felt the weight of the monopod lessen and swear everything happened in slow motion. I heard the lens hit the ground and I anticipated the next sound to be shattering glass. Well the sound never happened and to find out only damage was a moderately compressed back lens cap and a small abrasion on the lens hood. I checked auto and manual focus and everything was fine. IS is working properly and no rattling in the internals. Guess I dodged a bullet this time!

Wow, reading your post made me feel the weight on your monopod lessen. It sent a shiver down my back. Glad nothing serious happened.

That brought me back to when I watched my 18-55mm fall down a flight of stairs.
If I hadn't had a UV filter on it, that lens would have been toast.
