Hello,
first post, I bought a Nissin Di622, 2 weeks later I found out that I wanted to do off camera lightning and I also bought 2 285Hv. My next step was to try to make the Nissin di622 work with my 285Hv setup, as you might know the Nissin doesn't work with radio triggers, so I found the youtube video posted on the strobist website. I called on of my tech's he did the mod, he solder the two wires on the tester button and we placed a socket(we got a stereo instead of a mono socket, so I'm not sure if this is the problem), we triggered it and it works but maybe 1 every 5 or 9 times we tried, took the cable out and it started firing which I guess tells me there is a short.
does anyone know a tutorial(not video) on how to do this modification? I have another friend that is going to look at the mod to see if there are any shorts of any kind.
any links would be helpful for him.

thanks.

Hello

Welcome to the site.

I'm a little confused, can you enlighten me as to why the Nissin flash wont fire with radio triggers?? I can't think of any reason.

Anyway, I cannot help with a video of the mod. but it is not difficult. However, it makes a lot of sense to use mono plugs & sockets (and the sockets without the tripping switch in them) Keep it simple is the best way to go.

Maybe the trigger is not TTL that's why they modify.

Digging an old thread, but did you manage to solve this? I have the same problem where the flash fires when plugging in/out the cable. When it is fully plugged in, the flash actually freezes/crashes until I remove the cable (this is only when it is plugged to the trigger) if its just a cable with nothing plugged on the end, there it is still usable.

Any ideas?

I don't have that flash, so I can't really help too much. All that mod is doing is shorting the connection to make the flash fire. When you're plugging it in (or unplugging), it's quite possible that you're bridging the connection for a split second. I wouldn't be surprised if it fired.

What you could do is find a hotshoe adapter that also has the same mini plug and attach that to the flash. Plug your trigger into the hotshoe adapter and see if it exhibits the same freezing.

Are you using a stereo jack and cord? You need to use mono devices. The stereo stuff might keep the contacts shorted all the time if you have them plugged in just right.

I just rethought what I wrote last night. This is what I'd do to troubleshoot a normal flash. I add the ports to eliminate the extra hot shoe adapter. However, this probably won't work on your Di622. That's the whole reason you did the mod in the first place, right?

Im not 100% sure, about the jack. Im sure I purchased a mono jack, but it doesn't feel right when I plug in a 3.5mm jack. It feels as though I need to force it in to plug in. I can use the same cable and plug it into another 3.5mm socket (iphone) and it goes in 'normally'. I will be off to buy another mono socket to see if this works.
