This was my second time shooting skating and I got to shoot at the sole-tech training facility. I met a kid who told me he just turned 12 and he was ripping the whole night, turns out he is a shoe tester for the company. Please feel free to let me know what can be improved, I know my pp probably isn't that great, new to that as well.

Just a tad bit out of focus and you could use some more flash? Maybe off camera flash? You should also fill more of your frame with the subject, cropping would help but try filling the frame more with the camera so you crop less later.

thanks for the advice, I agree with everything you said. I cropped a lot of the other pics I took, but with these I was just trying to show what the kid was doing tricks off of. I would have liked to do off camera flash but I don't have a stand for the flash yet (have trigger and receiver though).

That kid is 12? Your timing is good, but there are some technical things you could work out. First off you could get a little lower which would make him look higher up.

If you have the trigger and receiver and flash then you can just lay the flash on its side and it will work. Hell have someone hold it for you. A gorilla pod is cheap and you can get it at walmart. Rig up anything because it is worth it.

The PP is not great. The white balance is different in all three. Were you using a manual white balance or did you change it in PP? The first two are underexposed. All three look like they could use some contrast adjustment.

The third one is definitely the best exposure, timing, and position of subject, but I liked the camera position in the other two more.

Thanks for the reply. yeah, he told me he just turned 12. I agree the pp isn't great, I definitely need to read up some on it. I'm also going to buy a stand within the next couple days so i will definitely try ocf next time.

Looks like your sole lens is the 17-40
Agree with everything said here....cool shots would be for you to get low, as in laying-down low, and have the kid do a trick pretty much right next to you and shoot at 17mm...the name of the game is to fill the frame so you don't have to crop. Keep as much detail as you can :)

yeah just have the 17-40 now, should have the 70-200 f4 as well in the near future. Yeah I agree I should have gotten in closer, but I was afraid to get in their way or have my gear get hit, but towards the end I was much more comfortable and I think next time I should be able to improve. thanks for the advice

My first reaction was that kid is not going to live to see 13. I bet his parents don't know he isn't wearing a helmet.

yeah, I don't really agree with him not wearing a helmet, but his mother was there watching. The kid definitely knew what he was doing though and knew how to fall to try to avoid hurting himself

Yeah, but my experience with cycling says that the one time you're gonna really hurt yourself in a crash you won't be able to control it. Helmets save lives, no arguing.
