I love Lt. Dan's Drunken Shrimp....looks like they are off the menu for the summer though....

I should try to go there when I'm up in Monterey next month...

Yeah, with the aurora that was coming to New England, I was going to head up to the white mountains last week to get some night photos, but I had to go to my grandfather's funeral instead.

I need to find some nice non-light polluting skies at night!

17-40 at 17mm on a 5D. f/4 and 30 seconds ISO 6400. Camera sitting on a picnic table with a shovel handle holding the lens at an angle.

It's not a plane but a meteorite. There are also 2 satellites in there as well.

Interesting.
I've not done night sky shots before so I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

First, why iso 6400? Wouldn't you want a lower ISO for night stuff?
and 2nd. why F4? (just wondering why you wouldn't do f8-11)
and 3rd. does it take the whole 30 seconds to give that nice galaxy/cloud? Just wondering because of the star movements.

I am curious. Obviously your shot is very nice so I'm not at all criticizing. Just wondering why.
