I believe the high iso is to get enough of the light from the not so bright stars, Lisa.

f/4 - for allowing as much light in without messing stuff up - but I would have thought that f/8 or even f/11 would have been sufficient enough.

30 seconds is a good enough length of time with the above settings as not to allow light pollution to ruin a photo.

I have read, and Baz (aka A.S.I.G.N) on here wrote a wonderful thread - https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=766644 - that if you are in an area with more light pollution - or that you want a "longer" photo, you can stack them - i.e. put the camera on high speed burst mode for 30 seconds at a time or something, using a wired remote, lock it in so it takes something like 2-3 hrs worth of photos, then using special software (that is free and downloadable), it churns it all out and gives you a wonderful photo...

What Harm said. Even though it was very dark out and you could see a ton of stars with the eye, and the milky way, the first few shots I took at ISo 1600 and ISO3200 came out with only the bright stars clearly visible.

I guess the right way to have done the shot is to take a bunch of exposures at a lower ISO and used a stacking program like Deepsky stacke (external link)r, but I was lazy and wanted to get what I could with one shot.

then you have the inherent issue of:

High ISO - more noise - shorter timed photos - stack them up with almost no blurring of stars

or

Low ISO - crappy camera - no noise - longer timed photos - staked up with possible blurring of stars due to the timing....

In all honesty, there was a bit of post processing as well. I did bump the black level and reduce the exposure of the raw a bit and that greatly reduced the noise. Also, cut back on the saturation as it wasn't really needed and that too reduced noise.

Yours is very nice as it is :)

Thanx.. It was more an experiment than anything else. We were out in the high desert and it was very dark. reviewing the picture hurt your eyes. :)
