I've been watching tutorials...this video tutorial makes this cool speedlight grid thing. My question is what is this sort of thing used for?

Tightens the pattern of the light... Makes it more directional. The longer the straws, the more directional it becomes.

Handy for hairlights or rimlights.

I have one of THESE (external link) Lisa.

Doubles as a bounce reflector when not rolled up into a snoot shape.

Similarly the grids used in a wind tunnel. Keeps the flow of air directional.

From that, I guess you would get less glare and hotspots in photography....

I snagged the one I have because it was on a clearance table at the time. I've done similar with CineFoil.

Mooo all!

Some lovely photos posted! No fall colors here yet, but I'm enjoying the nicer weather.

Probably the best example I could find of keeping the spread nice and tight:

IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/s1/v0/p735517108-5.jpg

(As a bounce device .. it leaves a little to be desired. You have to crank the flash to +3 or 1/1 and that just kills the batteries and makes your recharge times really looooooooooong...)
