Harm.....this image has had over 50,000 hits since it first went online. Not what I consider a great shot, but it sells and people keep coming back to it. The keywords are pretty straight forward in my autumn galleries....autumn, color, country, fall, landscape, leaves, rain, rural, scenic, season, trees

This is the shot on pbase.

IMAGE: http://www.pbase.com/woolburr/image/130054801/original.jpg

and the same shot on Zenfolio.

Wool, do you have Pbase set to compress originals or delete originals? I see no differences in my images between LR export and on my website.

Also, do you let Zenfolio add your watermark? If so, then they are processing your files and perhaps altering their appearance somehow?

Mike....I compress the originals....pbase doesn't display the photos quite as accurately as Zenfolio does. The shots on Zen look like the do on my system....the pbase shots occasionally pick up some artifacts. Zen does add the watermark, but it doesn't appear to have any impact on the image.

Do you have any sorts of stats tracking enabled?

...I compress the originals....

Can you explain further? I know we have looked at this before, but if you have Pbase set to compress the originals this may be the reason why your images are off. Or do you mean you compress them before uploading?

must be somewhere... Smugmug Pro account. There is a statistics section - but I don't think it just plops out a top 20 most popular photos!

So, PBase automatically has three levels, small (thumbnail), medium and large -- if you upload something larger than "Large", which is, I believe, 800 pixels at the widest then the site creates three compressed/resized versions and keeps your original intact -- at least I don't think there is any processing. If, though, your original is within the Large size then Large is unprocessed. At least, that's how I understand it.

But, you can have PBase compress the original if you wish to save storage space. I've never used that option -- Dan, is that what you are referring to when you say it comes out "different"? I just leave my original intact -- they are typically at POTN dimensions unless they are just "shots".

I myself haven't seen any

The largest image I upload to pbase is 1024 as a rule. High quality stuff goes to Zen and even that is set so that you can't pull the best quality image up and do a screen cap. Just my way of protecting my images from the folks that would rather steal than buy.

Well, PBase has a Statistics function that shows you both a very long list of daily hits (the list at least on mine is over a year old) and also a "most viewed" list with thumbnails of images and galleries that is for one day -- it automatically shows you the most recent day tabulated but you can click any day on the list to view those.

This all got updated when the server crashed last year -- in fact, I imagine that the long list of days goes back to that time. If I recall, all those stats disappeared when the crash happened. Hits would still show up when you viewed images and galleries, but no stats.

Correct....the pre-crash stats evaporated....and in my case, so did everything else. I am slowly adding stuff back to pbase, because I really like the exposure it gives images. Even with the same keywords....shots on pbase get 10 to 20x the hits as the identical shots on Zen.

Right, but if your gallery settings are setup to Recompress the originals that may be the problem, regardless of what size files you upload.

You can also use Google Analytics to keep stats.

dan, that's really interesting -- I've seen PBase stuff pop up on Google Images but never delved into it -- consequently I haven't been as good at keywording as I should be.

One thing I'm a bit disappointed in is that keywording evidently doesn't get picked up from the jpeg, as in Lightroom/PS keywords don't become PBase keywords from what I can see. Any thoughts on that?

Anyway, most days I get from 500 to 1000 hits, but if I don't post anything for a while the number can go down to sometimes 300-400. And then occasionally something odd happens -- like October 17th shows almost 2000 hits and then Oct. 19th shows almost 3000 hits. I hadn't posted anything during those days and there is not rhym or reason to the "most viewed", so I actually thing the new PBase statistics software has issues...also, it can be days between updates to current days.

I really don't notice a major difference in IQ between Recompress on or off. This one has been recompressed and doesn't appear to suffer too bad. Others get clobbered right from the get go.

That is one advantage to Zen over pbase....keywords entered in LR carry over. I don't know why it doesn't work on pbase, but I suspect it is in the way they have the database set up. The gallery software was pre-LR and back when I first joined pbase, most of the photo editing software had very little keywording and no IPTC function at all. The software has improved, but pbase hasn't kept up with the times in that regard.
