Well, picking up the keywords would certainly be a nice feature -- they do a pretty good job with picking up most of the shooting exif, except for the lens ID.

I really don't notice a major difference in IQ between Recompress on or off. This one has been recompressed and doesn't appear to suffer too bad. Others get clobbered right from the get go.

Perhaps it has to do with the initial file size? I wonder if they use one setting or if they have a target ouput size they try to achieve that would result in more compression on larger files.

That is one advantage to Zen over pbase....keywords entered in LR carry over. I don't know why it doesn't work on pbase, but I suspect it is in the way they have the database set up. The gallery software was pre-LR and back when I first joined pbase, most of the photo editing software had very little keywording and no IPTC function at all. The software has improved, but pbase hasn't kept up with the times in that regard.

Maybe with their renewed interest in improving Pbase we will get this kind of functionality at some point!

That would be nice. Perhaps Emily has rekindled Slug's fire and he will get re-involved with site development. He just kind of coasted for about 4 years.

So I thought I would update everyone of my data recovery. Right now I have 1949 files still missing (started with over 10k!). I have to sort through files that have no parent folder and have filenames that are meaningless with no extensions. So here is what I did.

Copied the files to my local machine under a new folder - Recovered Files.
Sorted them into 3 folders - JPEG, RAW, TIFF - based on file size and date (I shot JPEG for a while this year).
Added the appropriate extensions for each folder.
Created a new catalog in LR and MOVED the files to new folders based on date under the Recovered Files folder.
I also changed the filename on import to better match my typical name. This means less renaming once I match the images.

So now I just have to go through each folder using Fastone on one screen and LR on the other. In LR I am using the metadata filter to go by date of the image and then I will use Fastone in the corresponding folder to match any images up, then rename the files to match. I will then copy the images over to the proper folder.

I noticed while going through the temporary LR catalog that many of the images I was missing seemed to be showing up! I doubt I will get everything, but I saw a lot so I have my fingers crossed.

PS, I ran a backup today before doing all of this! ;)

It is encouraging, but damn this is tedious work! I'm up to March 2006, only 4 more years to go!
