Also run Malwarebytes to make sure you are clean of any malicious software. G'Moorning All... Jay

I'm told this is about right for a desktop) - Performance is bouncing between 0 and 5% (Dual Core Intel) Sounds about right. - Double click IE and it adds TWO instances of IE in the list of processes. - Close IE and those two instances stay in the list! - Double click IE again and it adds two more! - Close it, they stay .. wash, rinse, repeat adding two more instances of IE each time. Eventually, the computer hangs. Obvious question, but I'll ask anyway: is this just with IE, or some other programs, or all programs? "Be seeing you."

For instance, right now, there are two instances of IE in the Task Manager with one taking up 15K of memory and the other is using 74.6K of memory. If I click on the smaller memory chunk instance of IE and "End Process" it kills them both but the processor is still runing at 50% total capacity with no programs running. Something definately is rotten here... Bad RAM perhaps? Not if it's just IE that crashes. Programs don't load to the same address every time, depends on what memory is available. You might uninstall IE and download a fresh copy from MickeySoft. "Be seeing you."

I have to admit, despite having grown up in a General Motors world (Dad was a GM "Lifer"), the 4Runner I have now is a great SUV. I've been leasing it for three years and the lease is up in January but I want to see what kind of deal they'll give me to buy it outright. @ Shane: Nice railyard... So, the computer woes continue but I think I'm zeroing in on the issue. You may have seen my explanation on FB but in case you and I aren't connected, let me throw this out here and see what the inteligencia here thinks. Machine was having booting issues and had twice turned itself off on me in the middle of a Photoshop session. Took it in and discovered that the fan on the video card had failed and it was causing an overheat. Ok, fine... Swap out card from a 512Mb ATI to a 1Gb nVidia 9500GT. In the meantime, my computer shop proceeds to tell me that Norton Internet Security sux and that I may have some nasties running around causing a slowdown as well so I ask them to give it a good sweep. So, I get the box back home and have been having fits trying to get it running and keep it running with most of the issues appearing to occur in Internet Exploiter 8. So here's what I've discovered: - Open Task Manager and look at the list of processes (44 at boot .. I'm told this is about right for a desktop) - Performance is bouncing between 0 and 5% (Dual Core Intel) - Double click IE and it adds TWO instances of IE in the list of processes. - Close IE and those two instances stay in the list! - Double click IE again and it adds two more! - Close it, they stay .. wash, rinse, repeat adding two more instances of IE each time. Eventually, the computer hangs. I'm also noticing that at times, one core is running 100% busy and the other is doing nothing with NO programs running! The computer is 50% tied up with nothing going on. I have a sneaking susupicion that in cleaning out any nastiness, something got pranged and it's going to call for either a re-install of Windows (XP Home) or else we're going to have to nuke the C: drive and start from scratch (which I really don't want to do...) Anyone ever see anything like this? Is there a known cure? Sorry for rambling... I'll check back in the morning and see what's what... G'Nite! Step one....get CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download People that know me call me Dan
