A couple of weeks ago, the Riviera burned down. It was a hideout of Al Capone's and was on the Travel Channel several times. Pardon the photo quality since all I had with me was my P/S. We liked to stop here when out riding.

I live about half a mile off of the original Route 66 (we know it now as Watson Rd.). I can easily grab some shots of old motels and/or a couple of landmarks that are still up and running from yesteryear. However, an old town named Times Beach was shut down in the 80's because of dioxin contamination of the soil. The US gov't, under Ronald Reagan, bought the town out and forced the clean-up of the contaminants. The town was dissolved and now is Route 66 State Park. This is all that is left, except for some walking trials along the old plots of housing and an original bridge I still need to go back and shoot (not much life left in it being that it is already closed to any road traffic)... http://throughmyeyes-choppography.blogspot.com/

My family has made the trip from STL through about the OK/TX border. So many quaint towns that were alive are now just crushed because of Interstate 44, among others. It is a lot like the movie Cars, if you have smaller kids. http://throughmyeyes-choppography.blogspot.com/

There are some sections that were never paved in parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico on the Santa Fe loop and in Arizona. There are some brick sections of the real old rt in Illinois and some sections that are only 8 feet wide in Oklahoma.
