As for the "green stamps," FamousBarr (bought by May Company) used to a version of green stamps called Eagle Stamps. I can remember my grandmother going nuts over these things as recent as the mid 1980's. That ought to give our Norwegian friend some idea of a timeline.

I am curious as to how you got your bikes over here, or if you just rented them when you got over here? It seems like it would be very expensive to ship motorcycles across the pond for a vacation?

ps- I still owe some more of Route 66, but I cannot seem to get the time to do much other than check in right now.

We rented bikes outside Chicago, or actually there was a group of people before us that rented the bikes in L.A. and drove to Chicago, then we picked them up in Chicago and drove them back to L.A.

Great photos! I used to live just off Route 66 in Flagstaff AZ. Sadly, I have no pics - it was during my pre-photography days.

Here in Illinois, on motorcycle, we prefer to ride it in the fall. There isn't much shade from the sun and it gets really hot in the summer (probably not as hot as the more southwestern states-LOL!) I like to look at the sign in books at some of the stops to see where people are from.

Have you ridden on any of the really old brick sections here in Illinois?

Finally got out to shoot The Mother Road a bit. A few more on are my Flickr pages in the Route 66 set.

Chain of Rocks Bridge just north of downtown STL. Primary Mississippi River crossing in it's day. Built 1929; closed 1967.

A shot with the "bend" in view. This old bridge has a 22 degree bend in the middle of the span. (Read description on Flickr for more, if interested.)

Crestwood Bowling Alley. Owned by HOF Bowler Ray Bluth. Still open today on Watson Rd in St. Louis County.

More will follow as I get up and down St. Louis' version.

Haven't seen the brick sections. Are they more in towards the city, or past Funk's Grove? We usually head out South from Bolingbrook on Route 53 til we get to Joliet. Then we head South from there.

I remember seeing these caddies as a kid with not one bit of graffiti at them. it's horrible what they look like today.

Ben Willmore did a Route 66 tour. Here is his website. You may already know it, but he specializes in HDR.

What an awesome road. Some great shots there. I didn't even know where it went to/from till I saw the map posted. We see the occasional pic of it over here in Aus and know it is an iconic road. Now that is one trip I'd love to make!

I hope to do this trip when I have the time after I retire. Hopefully in a classic C2 Corvette Roadster (external link).

Spotted this blog a few weeks back ... Beth Fenwick's Route 66 road trip. (external link)

There are some sections that were never paved in parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico on the Santa Fe loop and in Arizona. There are some brick sections of the real old rt in Illinois and some sections that are only 8 feet wide in Oklahoma.

Hmm.....

Not to be too argumentative, but I'm not aware of any sections in Oklahoma that were not paved or were only 8 feet wide. I do know that a bunch of it was the narrow two lane concrete with the little lip on the edge (to keep the water ON the road.). Can you give examples of non paved sections in Oklahoma?

Went for a drive near Los Angeles a few years ago. Gotta go for a longer trip one of these days.
