Verify your flash is set to manual and PW and meter are on the right channel.
Hope this helps

You are asking how a light meter can be used practically when shooting in a manual mode?

You use it when you want to meter the lights. you just hit the button on your light meter to get a meter reading off the strobes instead of having to use a sync cord.

Right. Got that. Now. If you need to adjust the output of the strobe can it be done on the 5d or on the 580? I also notice that the Sekonic will give a % of light from the strobe vis a viz the total overall exposure

No, you cannot adjust the output in camera.

So unlike when the strobe is teathered via a cord if you can't adjust on the fly one has to manually adjust on the unit? If that's the case then I guess one has to guess at the original exposure take the reading and then go to where the flash resides and adjust accordingly? Seems rather clumsy!
