I had to crawl seventy yards along the shore, hiding behind vegetaton on this one, poking the lens between thick patches of grass. The big bull was napping right on shore in a clump of bushes, and I had to wait him out. After a half hour he got up and started heading along the lakeshore in my general direction. I fired off a few shots and retreated as fast as I could. I wish the light had been better but hey, it was still a fun moment. And wouldn't you know it, the bull came right out where I was hiding. I was up the hill forty yards away, preparing to run. The bull was not happy when he saw me. I don't blame him. They get fiesty in the fall. You really need to keep a very long distance. As I took the shots, I could hear antlers cracking in the taller trees. It seems this was a competition area for the bulls, and this guy was just taking a break.

Nice shots! From what I have read they don't have good eye sight. But they can smell and hear very well. It is smart to keep your distance.

Nice work, I love seeing a good sized bull moose in the fall. I agree with you on keeping your distance, I once had one in Yellowstone, before the rut, that I was watching and he came out into the open and I made the mistake of crouching down and he did not seem to like that very much. He took four or five steps, and man do they cover ground fast.

Great shots, and a great story as well. Thanks for sharing.

Now that is a lot of bull. I have not seen any at Bowman all summer but we do not have the best habitat for them.

Risingwolf -

Are you posting from Bowman? I'm also interested in your comment about the moose habitat in the Bowman area. Any reason why it's weaker?

From Bowman? Nope, no electricity or cell service just the way I like it. At home for a day to cut the yard etc. We see moose on rare occasions but we do not have the ponds and plants that they seem to like. Find tracks on some of the trails but a rare visitor to this drainage.
