Just curious if the Sigmalux handles CA better than the Canon 85?

Currently debating these two.

CA = Chromatic Aberration.

Not California.

YES, it will handle CA MUCH better at the same apertures. With saying that, the Sigma is a much newer lens. So I would expect it to. =)

The Sigmalux is a very good lens. I cant wait to see what happens with the new 85mm 1.4 they come out with! Maybe a AF close the the 85 1.8 and the DOF and sharpness close the the 85L....that would be awsome! I can dream!

Good to know.

I am still debating the preferred focal length. I think I want a general-use, available-light prime that could be used for portraits if necessary.

Well if your using a 1.6 camera, the Sigma 30 1.4 is a great lens for general use, available light and can be used to portraits!

In my case I would be using a 5DII.

Then 50 would be great for it! Thats what the 30= on a 1.6! I cant wait to get something with the high ISO of the 5Dmk2 or better! Seeming how its 1 stop cleaner vs the 7D, The low light capabilities would be great! The 85=50(well around that) and I often find that just to long(especially in doors!). So the Sigma would be great! It's the best 50mm 1.4 out IMO. I'll be getting one soon.

The answer is yes. You will see a noticeable reduction in CA over the 85mm f/1.8. In fact, you will barely see any ;)
I don't have the 50, but got 30mm, and it's a decent lens. My copy of 85mm is REALLY sharp though, and Sigma is a little softer. Still usable wide open at f/1.4.

Which do you find reaching for most? Your Sigma 30, Canon 50, or Canon 85?

Currently debating these two.

It has far less CA than the 85/1.8. The latter wide open can have a lot of CA whereas the Sigmalux has very little even wide open. I have both on a 5d and prefer the 50 as I find it more versatile as I can even use it as a walkaround lens if need be. But really I just like it's bokeh compared to the 85/1.8 hence why I use it more.

Same here. The extra FL of the 85 comes in handy at times, but I prefer the Siggy hands down.
