In my opinion, there is no such thing as a good and cheap (as in significantly under $100 US) tripod unless you can find a real deal on a used good tripod.

Slight correction in concept, Skip...you can get 'good' and 'cheap' in the same tripod, but it will be very heavy! My Bogen 3036 comes to mind...cost me on $125 new a long time ago, but 10 lbs without head. You can't find 'good' and 'cheap' and 'light' in the same tripod.

Strong/stable, light, cheap.

Pick any two, because you can't get all three.

Induro Tripods (external link) Fry's sells them for under $150 and they are amazingly good for the price. I recommend the AT114

Manfrotto or Vanguard, take your pick.

I'm also in the market for my first tripod. I've actually found one that's stable, light _and_ cheap.

Gitzo's GT2531EX. Stable and light? Check and check. And cheap. Because it's going to be a lot cheaper for me to have this for the next 15-20 years, than the path you're in the danger of walking where you buy a lot of tripods over the same timeperiod, instead of just getting a great one from the start. Letter to George comes to mind.

The thing about tripods: You'll probably be able to sell it with low loss if you find out it wasn't for you after all.

Invest the money first time.
