I've had my Canon 18-200 IS for little over a year now. I recently bought the 17-55 2.8 IS and LOVE the difference in IQ I get over the 18-200. Now I'm thinking about selling the 18-200 and upgrading to a 70-200 f4L. I can't decide whether to go for the IS version or not. Is there a difference in IQ between the IS version and the non-IS version? My gut is tell me to just save up for the IS version in case I ever have to shoot longer range outside when it gets closer to dark.

IS would be helpful with F4, or you could get the 70-200 2.8 non IS. What do you like to shoot?

I would br shooting mostlymy son's baseball and soccer games. I don't have the steadiest of hands, and that's why I'd consider the IS version.

For sports and action freezing shot, you would be better off to save the money for 7D w/ higher ISO capability. IS will only help to reduce hand shake.

If you will mostly shoot at 200mm, consider 200 f/2.8 prime instead. It's nearly the same price as 70-200 f/4 no IS. Another option is to pick Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM Macro II. New is btw $800-900. Used is around $600.

IS won't help when shooting sports. I love my new 70-200mm and have been using it for little league baseball. It's great on a sunny day, good in overcast, but once the sun starts setting, you'll be out of luck. If you could afford the IS version, I would go for the f/2.8 non-IS instead

I would go with the IS version it is a Very Sharp lens. The IS will help in low light with your shakey hands during slow Shutter Speed but slow shutter speed won't freeze action as you already know!!!!
But the lens is very good and light weight for other things other then just sport.
If you decide to sell it later on, you will sell it faster with the IS. And resell on L lenses is very good if you take care of it.

My 2 cents
Good luck

I definitely need / want the 200mm zoom capability. I find that I zoom that far out pretty often now with my 18-200. I think I'm going to save up for the 70-200 f4 IS. Any idea what I can expect to sell my Canon 18-200 IS for?
