I had the very good fortune to find a pair of nesting Long-eared Owls in my home town of Ottawa, Ontario. This species is elusive here and not many people get to see it but I like a challenge :D

I was looking up when I should have been looking down. Could have saved some unecessary neck cranking. Perched on a branch low to the ground, my heart skipped a beat as this juvenile long-eared owl stared right at me. Nestlings begin to walk out of the nest onto nearby branches at about 3 weeks, but are not capable of flight until about 5 weeks.

Photographed with a Canon 40D and 70-200 2.8L lens.

Great shot. Have you ever seen any shots where the owl was NOT looking directly at the camera? I am sure such shots exist but they must be rare.

Now there's a first for me. What a great shot. Almost has an animation look to it.

Thanks Steve. It was a thrill to see this owl let alone to photograph it.
