What kinds of stuff do you like to shoot? What camera body do you have? The 50 1/8 is a real inexpensive lens. That would be the first one I would probably get. I have it and it is a super sharp lens. I went with the 70-200 F4 lens too. Mine doesn't have the IS but I got one hell of a deal on it and am very happy with the pics from it. It is a razor sharp lens.

Why does he need a second one?

It really depends on what you like to shoot. If it was me, I'd go for the 70-200 for the extra reach and to give me a different perspective on things.

I'd probably do the same. Depends on what the OP shoots though. If wanting to do macro, then go that route. If not, then how important is the extra stop of the 100mm.

Would you rather try you're hand at macro, or would you rather have a versatile, semi telephoto zoom? Two completely different lenses intended for two completely different purposes. Only you know what you desire more.

Oh the choices lol, i love doing a bit of macro, and recently after doing some wedding stuff, i loved doing the rings and so on... plus for portraits.

However saying that, as you said i travel quite a bit and would love the extra reach.

Maybe both lol

Have you compared the 100mm macro (non L) to the L version? You might feel that extra money is not worth the IS since it may not be noticeable once you are very close to your subject. The savings could go towards the 70-200

Im just thinking of the IS, with my not so steady hands sometimes, otherwise id probably just by the non L version. But i use it mostly for walkabout stuff too, and im thinking of something that is a bit of an all rounder... the L seems to be just that.

I have to shoot Amir Khan meeting with our mayor next week too, and im whinking this would be a nice addition along with my sig to do the job :)
