So I am aware that the Epson Stylus 2200 is the 900 pound gorilla in this field but is anyone using something else? I use an Epson 1520 and Epson Stylus Pro 5000 w/ a fiery Rip Station 5000. They are both ink hogs and break down constanly. I am aware of the pigment vs. dye argument and for the sake of this post let's just say that isn't an issue. I was thinking of buying a Canon i950 or i9100. You guys have any thoughts or experience with them.

I use a Canon S9000 for printing photos. The quality of the prints is excellent, and the S9000 is a very fast printer compared to my old Epson 1270!

The i9100 looks very promising (whenever it comes really available).

I am using an Epson 2200 and still use my old Epson 1270. To be honest I do not see much difference between them.

I use a HP Deskjet 970ce. Maybe not the
greatest colors (three inks), it won't do borderless,
and it's probably not the highest resolution, but it is as reliable as a brick (HP stuff tends to be that way).

Of course, I'm thinking about upgrading to an Epson 2200. Will I notice the difference?

I bought a canon s9000 after years of using epson, (stylus pro, 850 ) I got sick of the frustration using their drivers, I started on win 95 ( after dos ) up through 98 millenium and am in xp home now. I just found that their drivers gave too many varying results ( and don't discount that I may share in the responsibility some too).
So I got the canon and am very happy with it . ( am using it on a Mac in osx)
But I find epson has the majority of users who know what they are doing ( 1270 and 2200 ). Probably why I am on the canon. Anyway, from what I have experienced in the correlation between camera , computer, and printer. the output from computer to printed medium seems to be the hardest to satisfy.

I have been using the new Canon i550 since it came out in Canada in November 2002. The prints are stunning, analog photo quality and the printer was only C$179.

I forgot to add that it prints borderless.

Agree.

For this price it's a phantastic printer - and you have "no cost", ink is very cheap. I use it also since some month.

i850 is similar, uses 2 picoliter instead 5 picoliter. also 4 colors, a bit faster, price 50$ higher

i950 uses 6 colors, price i550 * 2 - excellent printings, also 2 picoliters and fast

Since years I am a "Canon-printer-fan", but the i-series is the best I ever saw. For lowest costs.
