Sell my 24-70L for a 35L?

I really dont know if ill regret this afterwards. I shoot 3 things. Landscape, Portraits (ill get into fashion/glam & engagement shoot soon) and just general street photography. I think the 35mm FL is good enough, but in terms of giving up versatility for a faster lens, is this a solid move? What else am I going to gain by switching to a 35L?

135L, 50 1.8 and the 24-70

I'm in your same position, but I have both 24-70L and the 35L. I've been thinking of selling the 24-70 because I don't use that much. Typically I'll bring the 24-70 when i need a one lense solution for the day. The only thing that you really gain from going to 35L is shallow DOF that you can't get with the 24-70 and much sharper pics.

My suggestion is to have both and see what suits your style.

You should have both.

It's similar to having 2 85mms. One 1.2 and one 1.8.

Ahhh, unfortunately I can only afford to keep one for this year (1 lens a year rule ).

35L will gain you sharper photos and shallow DOF.

Check to see what focal lengths you shot at most with your 24-70. I bought a 35L to replace a 24-70mm, it didn't work out for our style.

I shoot events, mostly weddings along with some commercial work. Based on the many gushing reviews I purchased a 35L a few weeks ago and have since shot a few events with it. My lineup is the 35L, 135L, 24-70 2.8, 50 1.4, and a Tokina 11-16 2.8. All lenses are used on one of three bodies .. 5D2, 1DMK2, or a 40D.

My thoughts so far are it's a nice lens but nothing earth shattering. It is two stops faster that the 24-70 so you can use lower ISO's and get more control over background blur. But that's about it .. so unless you need the speed because of low lighting conditions or you like that environmental portrait look with the moderate wide angle, blurred BG I say keep your 24-70.

For me it's just not a watershed lens like the 135L was for me. YMMV.

You are better off keeping the 24-70L. The flexibility of Focal lengths trumps the flexibility of aperture [f/1.4-f/2.8] when used for fashion/glam.

I use the 35L when i need to shoot indoor/ and natural light portraits. The 24-70L comes out to play when I use lights and small apertures (f4.0 - f11). Are you going to be shooting with studio flash?!

I have both, and I use the zoom more than the prime. Even though qualitywise (zoom accuracy, IQ, etc) of the prime is superior than the zoom, the versatility of the zoom wins everytime I needed to decide which lens to use. So my suggestion to you is no, keep the zoom.

It depends on your shooting style.

How about trying this: Try using your 24-70L ONLY at 35mm for a week or two and see how you like it

I sold my 7 year old 24-70L a week ago. I have a 5Dc body and now I am looking for a lens to fit my shooting style. Like you, I like landscape , few portraiture, and street photo style.

I almost pulled the trigger for another brand new 24-70L and a 100mm f2, but still does not like the weight of the "Brick".

My budget is below $2000, so I kinda thinking of getting a nice 100L macro for street photo with few closeup subjects to mix with and match it with 24-105L. I`m still undecided.

Today, after researching again. I looked at 24L II and it does what I do best, landscape, can do close up subjects (min. focusing distance is around 8-9 inches.) and portrait too if you move closer.
it has f1.4 that gives a better bokeh too! Then I`ll match it with a cheap Canon 85 f1.8 for real portrait and longer focal length if needed. Did I forgot to mention street photography also?

BTW, when I had my 24-70L . I shoot 24 mm or 70mm outdoor most of the time.

I think I`m gonna pull the trigger this time!
