i've been out of photography for oh say 5 years, my last camera i bought is the 20D. I was just wondering if the $375 price difference in the 50D or the Rebel T1I is worth the difference. the specs seem similiar. i really want the 7D but it's going to be a bit before i can afford that so i just need something to get back into the swing of things, so if you guys don't mind, let me know what ya think, thanks.

I would just keep saving for the 7D, honestly.
Get the camera you want, even if that means waiting a little bit longer.

Oh. Well in that case, get the T1i. If you can splurge, the t2i offers better video and a couple nicer features.
That way you can record adorable videos of your baby along with nice photos.

The 50D doesn't do video, if that matters to you. It does have capability to micro adjust for the lenses. That alone was worth the upgrade from 20D to 50D for me. I don't know if the T1I has that feature.
If you decide on the 50D I think you'll be happy with it. I can't say about the T1I since I've never used one.
Good luck.

The T1i can't micro adjust and it's the only thing that I feel like I'm missing with mine.

If you were comfortable and happy with the 20D, the 50D should be no different.. Menu is different but controls are the same..

It'll be far less expensive for you to pick up another 20D. It may be even less expensive than that for you to get your current 20D repaired. What happened to it?

Honestly, the T1i has nothing on the 20D except for its rear screen and its sensor. From what I can tell, the 20D beats it for everything else, especially if you shoot RAW.

Note, too, that if you're willing to put up with the relatively slow speed, you can pick up a used 10D for even less. That'll get you a working camera which has really excellent image quality at lower ISOs and you'll be able to make use of all your lenses except for your 18-55. You might find it worth your while to see what KEH has (http://www.keh.com (external link)). They offer a 60 day warranty on the vast majority of the used cameras they sell.

OP, I guess you're stationed at dyess AFB?

Have you looked at the T2i? MOst of the specs are the same with the 7d. Same 18 megapixel, metering, video capabilities etc for half the price. Although with that in mind, you have a slower frames per second and lesser build quality (plastic vs metal). Personally, the plastic isn't that bad IMHO. Add a grip and the feel for the camera gets better.

the only reason I mentioned t2i because you were looking at t1i and the price difference isn't that much

Hope that helps

I'd go for the 40D myself, but I'm biased. The 40D is some insane bang for the buck right now.

I definitely agree with this if the OP isn't intent on saving up for a 7D, or isn't concerned with how long that'll take.

I'll agree, for the $$ the T2i (550D) looks pretty good

The T1i should serve you perfectly (its what i use) well as long as you dont mind the smaller body. I got the grip for mine and it fits my hands just great. Bit small without it though.

Gallery in my sig (website link) if you want to know what i can do with it.

the sensor is the most important part of the camera. IQ and ISO performance-wise, the t1i wins clearly. Its like saying "this car is way better than that car - look at the doorhandles on this one!"

I would say if video is not important, go with the 50D. I have found that the micro adjust has saved me on many occasions, especially on my third party lenses, the feel is much better (for me) in comparison to a rebel sized camera, good fps for actions shots, and the price is decent.

If video is important, I would definitely choose the T2i over the T1i. It's the closest thing to the 7d you will find in your price range.
