Here are some of my bike photos from the Ironman today. I figured I would use this as an opportunity to try panning. This is the first time I have legitimately had a chance to do this. C&C welcome.

All were shot with the Rebel XT and the kit lens.

Most were shot in Shutter Priority or Manual with the shutter set to 1/60 and the aperture set accordingly.

I was having trouble keeping the riders faces in focus when I started. (I was using center focus point in AI Servo) but I switched to the focus point in the top of the frame, still used AI Servo, and they started to turn out better.

Wow..great work. I did this for a triathalon a few weeks back with much poorer results. The only downside of yours is the busy backgrounds...next time try and find some nice greenery or a uniform BG if possible.

Good job on the panning. Maybe a little tighter cropping. I like #7 the best.

Thanks y'all. Some of these are cropped pretty tight already as I was trying to reach across the street at 55mm. Any more cropping and I am afraid the pictures will look like crap. I really need a 70-200...or maybe something longer..

You've got the panning down. Yeah, I'd also like to see tighter crops to accentuate the rider more. Not crazy about the backgrounds, I think spectators somewhat distract the eyes away from the rider. How about something colorful but neutral like flowers, or just colorful banners? I know, it all depends on wha you have to work with at the time. I like #8, although they look bored. If you actually had Tyler going by, then WOW!! It ain't easy. Nice job!

Excellent panning shots, next time you might want to watch the backgrounds as it would greatly improve your shots.

Dave.

thanks again guys, I stayed downtown from 6am to 12 where I took most of these shots and where the majority of the spectators where. There are parts on the course where the backgrounds are nicer, but by noon I was tired and hungry so I took a break and went home.

Again this was my first time to try panning so I really was trying primarily to keep the riders in focus (I honestly thought that nothing was turning out well when I would look at my XT's like 1 inch screen DOH!!), but yes I do agree some of the backgrounds are distracting.

Shutter speed was primarily at 1/60

Again, thanks guys.

Very well done especially using the kit lens. Might just be me, WB looks a little off in first one. Other than that and the backgrounds, I really like em.
