Found a cool way to lens align... looks promising.

Very cool link and process. This has got to be just about the simplest way to do this and the fastest. I also might add, probably the cheapest and maybe the best.

Certainly worth a try before going about and spending $200 on a tool.

I think this solves some of the same problem the lens align tries too and does it very simply (i.e. sensor/target coplanarity). As well, being able to do this without having to compare images after they have been shot is a big bonus and time savings. Since this whole argument about tools saving money seems to be the benefit to LensAlign, if you can do this without spending any money and do it faster, that sort of solves the issue, I guess.

I just ordered the light version.. I will see how consistent the results are..

Got my lite version yesterday, suprisingly the Lens Align results are more accurate to than the other methods I've used. Aligning the camera with the mirror system takes some time and patience. I think it's worth, the lenses are a little sharper than before.

Interesting. What I found is the MA is more drastic on larger lens a -1 or +1 would make a difference and I know for a fact that an adjustment of 7 or more either way would put the focus point either way behind or in front of the target. I had the 300 f4 set to a +7 but lens aligned showed it needed no adjustment. The +7 was way off the chart (back focusing).

hollis_f wrote in post #10504743 (external link)
Hmmm, strange. With my 300 and a 1.4x TC changing the MFA value had little effect on the focus. A setting of +2, +7 and +12 all looked perfect.

I read that thread after I got LA. Folks say it works for them so I guess it's good. But note 1D3 and 1Ds3 users: According to the thread, it does not work for 1D3 and 1Ds3 as they do not have remote AF feature. I have the 1D3...

Just tried this method, it validated all my lens align results, so if you haven't already got a lens align, just follow this approach.

1Dx, 1DM4, 5DM2, 7D, EOS-M, 8-15L, 17-40L, 24 TSE II, 24-105L, 50L, 85L II, 100L, 135L, 200L f/2.8, 300L f/4, 70-200L II, 70-300L, 400Lf/5.6

Unless you have a 1D3 or a 1Ds3...be sure to read the 2nd page of the thread.

Yes it does look like tethered approach works great. Nothing against Lens Align but I firmly believe the product was priced way to high. This in itself created the need to find a good free approach. Had lens Align been priced better I think folks would not have looked as hard for a free solution.

Not all cameras with MA will work with this method ( see the thread ). There are issues with the canon utility and ability to use the focus controls in the utility. 1D MKIII owners are all rich any way so they could actually pay $700-800 for an after market product ( Grin ).

All you would have to do with the 1dmk3 is to just set the MA and then compare the focus in either live view remote on the screen or actually take the image and compare via Lightroom's compare capabilities - which are still the methodology required by LA. The point being that the cost of this system has not even approached $1.00 (printed paper target and cheap small mirror) and it just as good and fast.

Played with the Tethered system last night and did my 400mm today. Simply amazing how accurate it is with live view at 200% on a 27 inch monitor.

This is without a doubt the way to go. If you have not tried it you should... Thanks go out to Arash Hazeghi.
