How does this stand up for a shot of the moon at 400mm? Looking for feedback please.

I would have cropped it so there isn't so much empty black space to the right side. Other than that it looks very good.

It's a really crisp shot. I would knock down the brightness along the limb. The terminator is great and it looks like that's where the exposure is best, but the portion towards the right is a little overexposed.

Thanks for the feedback. Adjusted the exposure a bit. Is this better or worse?

Hi there

Nice job - is this a one frame shot? Impressive detail if so.

I prefer the first, as the terminator is the aim of lunar photography. The craters should be well lit, with clear dark shadows showing relief. But then again I'm no artist, so aesthetically speaking the second could be more pleasing to the eye. maybe.

again, nice job

Hi HK,

I like this a lot! (Shot 2 is better)
The 400mm lens shot gives you amazing reach presenting great detail!

This Thread and your Post here is now inspiring me to indulge too!

The second one's better overall but, like ecce_lex said, you're losing detail in the terminator. Overexposure favors the terminator and underexposure favors the limb (curved part to the right).

Try this: take your original and, if in Photoshop, try using "Shadows/Highlights" to just knock down the highlights and leave the shadows (terminator) alone. Most postprocessing software has something like this.

And, you might as well crop the shot to save someone some disk space.

Great shot, but I do have a question, people are talking about the terminator and the limb...WHAT? LOL named parts of the moon?

Terminator is the area where the light and dark area of the moon meet, for example when the moon is in a crescent phase it is the line that divides the non-illuminated from the illuminated side. The Limb is the outer edge of the moon, or the border of the disc.
