I was able to get an iPhone 4 on the release date and have been happy with it since. It does HD video quite well. Nothing like having a 7D or 5D MKII, still pretty impressive. If you needed to record video without needing to zoom in and out this works pretty well. It even has the tap to focus feature that allows you to tap the screen and what you tap on is what is auto focused on. However I needed to be able to mount it on a tripod, and I messed around until I came up with this! Watch the video and tell me what you think! I realize that if I wait a while someone will come up with a much better (probably more expensive) device, but hey...I wanted it now...lol

Yes you can do it, but why. If you want to shoot Pro HD use Pro gear. I am so tires of people trying to be edgy and shoot on their phones. Jeez. It would look nice if you could get rid of the jumpy popping in and out. The still shots do look good. But again I ask WHY?

First step........ Take the lens cap off.

Ok...first of all I could afford a $200 phone with HD video capabilities. I cannot afford PRO HD gear nor do I have the need for PRO HD gear, since I shoot stills. I thought I would play around with the ability to do video on my phone and was quite pleased. If you really question the idea of shooting video with a phone, please watch the video here http://fstoppers.com …-a-video-on-the-iphone-4/ (external link) These guys done an amazing job!

I agree that it is nice to play video if you can. I would love to have a nice camera that I could do exactly that with. BUt where my frustration come in with this is, how far down can we continue to dilute this industry? The two examples you pointed to are fine examples of great camera work and great lighting. Also a lot of color correction in the music video. It has nothing to do with the fact that they used a camera phone to capture the material. Period. You can not hand this phone to everyone else and them go out and recreate this look. Thetre is a lot more too it than "Look I have an Iphone that shoots 720P". Hell half the people in the market now cant tell you why they want the P or what it stands for. Or why they want to shoot 24 fps or even what that means. I have worked for just at twenty years in this industry and its bad enough that every kid who's dad can afford an apple is now an editor cause he has FCP. The tools DO NOT make the end product, they can help. Its the people behind the lens and computers that make the magic happen. Sorry for the rant. I just had a baby and Im a little lacking in the sleep department. this is drected to no one in particular. Cheers

I agree with lecherro - when the OP said that he was going to start a professional video services company, using his iPhone as their primary method of capture, I thought WHAT?!?!

Oh wait, he never said that, nevermind. I hear ya brother, but this is a photo forum with over 250k members. Will bring in all types, including people excited about the video capabilities on their new iPhone.

Congrats on the new baby!!!! Been there, sleep will resume after a few months. :D

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES all video worth while is worth using a tripod. Nothing sucks more than needing a shot to be steady and having the shot shake like an earthquake. Shaky is essentially an effect. Use it when you have a need for it. you can always make it wiggle but you cant always stabelize.

Lecherro, you sound like a bitter bitter person. No offence.

Your rant above certainly makes sense, but I can't see the relevance to what the OP is doing. No one said the tools make the final product - notice that most of the duration of those pro videos posted above was on the MAKING of those videos. I don't think anyone is going to walk away from those clips thinking to themselves "Oh that's amazing, I'm gonna go home and pull off something similar right now".

The OP simply wanted to steady some videos on his iPhone.. I mean, if he can do it with a few bucks, why not? This is handy consumer innovation, nothing more. I'm really not sure how (or why) that should lead to a general rant about diluting the industry. I really think your comments are a bit unfair.

J.

I wonder if this will work if the Iphone4 is in THIS (external link) case? It makes the iphone4 a bit thicker, and might let it slip into the tripod holder.

Oh it looks like iphone tripod holder dot com has made little soft pads that go into the holder so that it will fit the iphone4. Also something like this might work as well : http://cgi.ebay.com …ain_0&hash=item439fd0e1c1 (external link)
