Yes, the mini/flex system can also be used as manual (dumb) triggers, also in combination with PW Plus II, Plus, and MultiMax units.

TT1 = transmitter
TT5 / Plus II / Multimax = Auto sensing transceivers

TT1 can trigger both TT5 and Plus II and Multimax but cannot be triggered by others.

The Control TL system permits you to combine ETTL and manual.
Thus you can have ETTL on camera with a Mini, one or more speedlites on FLEXTT5s doing ETTL, and monolights with FLEX, Plus II or Multimax firing and taking advantage of Hyper Sync.

Here (external link) is a page on my tutorial site that describes how it works.

...........and with your 580EX II on the transmitters (mini or TT5) top shoe you can control the manual output level of each remote speedlite. Note that this feature is only available when using the 580EX II. Original 580EX will not do it.

Canon 7D, 40D, 1 - "L", 1 - almost L, 3 - primes, 3 speedlites, PW's and L358.

Right Olar,
Including Group C via the FEC.
It will also do that ratios and fire group C via an STE2 but there is no means for FEC.

Eventually (as in PW is saying sometime this summer) there will be the AC9 adapter for flexes that when coupled with the (as yet unreleased) AC3 will allow remote power control of your AB800.

If that interests you at all, it might be a better long term investment to get a flex to trigger your AB, even though you won't get any benefit yet.

Before you pull that trigger...check and make sure the PW's don't still have RF issues with the majority of Canon Flashes. They did when I had to decide and the PW solution was a sock to cover the flash and then later a special mount to shield them.
So at the time I went with Radio Poppers PX system and the JR's to push manual strobes as well.

Very happy with them and no kludgy fixes necessary.

Fired them off through houses where lighting and composition required specific angles out of line of sight from outside the house into the interior and from insane distances in tests (across streets etc...with no mis-fires)

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

I use a FlexTT5 to fire my monolights.
Partly because of the additional unit to control power remotely on the AB800s and secondly because the slight difference in price means I have backup Flex for lights as well as using the Flex to backup a mini if it goes bad.
