So I've been mulling this over for some time now. Later this year (November/December) I'll be in Egypt and Jordan for two weeks, and I'm wondering if I will need some GND filters. I'm sure many of my shots will be landscapes, which is why I was going that route. I'll be using a high end Hoya CPL, but not sure if that will be enough. For lenses, I'll be bringing a Siggy 15mm Fisheye, canon 10-22, Canon 24-70 and 70-200 2.8IS while on the Nile.

To add to the confusion, I'm most likely bringing a back-up camera. I don't want to be there and have something happen and not have a spare. My main is a 7D, and my current back-up is a 10D, which I'm thinking is not going to cut the mustard. I was thinking of getting a 5Dc to bring along, but that all depends on if I need the GND filters or not.

So if you were going, what would you do? High quality GNDs or a 5Dc as a back-up?

I don't use GND in the field anymore. In LR or PS you do a ND effect. Also in PS you do a merge between two shots using the top of one shot or bottom of the other.

I haven't played with it much, but I know with CS5 and the new Camera Raw 6.1 it has the GND filter option available. Just not sure of its efficacy. Blending wouldn't be a bad option, either.

I never took the jump to GND because I asked myself how often would the horizon line be smooth enough to fall exactly in the right spot. It seemed to me that there would always be something sticking up that would be in the wrong place (pyramid, anybody?). Maybe it's my imagination, but I think that the contour between the bright sky and darker lansdscape in a GND shot looks funky. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of them. What I would do is take a few good exposures of the beautiful dessert sky and then layer it in in post processing if the sky is that important to you.
