I think that flash should be used in every way possible, as long as it turns out great shots. Nightlife photography is one of a kind, perhaps the most artificial of them all. Light trails, strobes, 2nd curtain flash, it's all kinda 'fake', but it contributes to the general feel of clubs & nightlife in whole, which is all about fun & excitement. Just my 2 cents :D

I tend to look at it as an offshoot of photojournalism. If I need flash to expose the subject, so be it. Flash does have it's uses, and there's a reason we've all spent money on our 580s, STs, and so on. Sometimes it's just really that dark, and if busting out the flash lets you get the shot, so be it. Also, sometimes the light tech is asleep at the wheel.

But conversely, it's a hell of a lot of fun to use what's there. It's fun to play around with the intelligent lighting and ambient when possible.

I often turn down the flash exposure to 1/3 or 2/3, f4 - f8... shutter 1/25 - 1/50.. iso800,

If you're running f4, 1/25s, iso800 then you're exposure is about 1 2/3 stops less light than I use as my basic settings (f5.6, 0.5s, iso400). Ambient shots aren't really an option for me as there is only one club around here that I can focus in without focal assist, even then I can only do it when the roof turns on full.

Roof half turned on as an example of the lighting:

Ambient shot using just the roof light:

As you can see, when it does turn on you get a huge amount of coloured light that saturates the room. For some reason in England people love clubbing in caves, I've shot one place where it was that dark I actually bumped into stuff.

Very good reason for this... haha. I occasionally work at one place where the only source of light is dim Lamps gelled Red, it's open all weekend from thursday to monday morning and people stay there all weekend. Revolver Upstairs, Melbourne.

yeah if you don't have ambient light well then that's kind of a problem and you must rely on the flash as the primary source of light.

gave Photosynth a closer look tonight, and revisited this panoramic from 2008 -

its one of those deals where you can zoom in and look around - do full-screen on your browser and then hit Expand Viewer at the bottom toolbar to fill the screen -

I have a 360 kit that will do it in one pass, however, the whole getup is pretty cumbersome to do what you did, i.e. the thing looks like a sci-fi prop and you need a fair amount of space to work with.

Well led pictures walex19.
Personally I would delete the picture of that "ass". You don't want to be known as that perv photographer who takes pictures of asses do you ?
If there dancefloor is not so crowded, maybe it's better to take more tight pictures... meaning less background, longer focal length.
Seeing lots of empty spaces in a club is no good publicity for the club.

Of course... but people see only the picture not the whole story. I got already comments of other people with "poor girl" because I took I picture of her with a bit too much cleavage.
With tight pictures, I mean with less background, so with your 85mm instead of the 35mm.

Seriously?? I mean, its a club.... generally people will show more for that reason alone when going to one.

I'm honestly shocked someone would think "poor girl". Do these people actually go to clubs, or are they an older couple looking at random photos?

I'll satisfy someone who wants to take a pervy shot, but I usually won't publish unless it's a newsmaker. It's not like there's a real cost to shooting a frame.

The magic of doing galleries of nightlife photos is in the edit. 200 photos of crap is still crap. No one, and I mean no one, wants to look through 200 photos. I'll publish half that if it's a huge epic event, but my average gallery maybe hits 50 published images out of maybe 200 shot total. I shoot RAW and use small cards, so it keeps me judicious.

It was a facebook comment of an other girl who saw that picture (and that also goes out in clubs). She also said then: "I'm glad I have small boobs"
There were some people making jokes about her boos, and that girl didn't appreciate that.

You should really be aware of what's being told about you. Being a photographer means that you will be the center of critique.
So you really should watch your steps and behave.
Comments like this about you, you should really try preventing:
-He only takes pictures of girls.
-He doesn't want to take a picture of me, but only of the girls he's interested in and wants to hit on.
-He always looks angry.
-He was impolite.
-They think you're a loser, because you are too perfectionistic.
(-He was drunk)
It's of course your word against his/her.
Luckily there are also also a lot of people who appreciate your work as a photographer.

Heh, I know what you mean. I know what people say about me.

- He's mean. (I'm not mean, I just have things to do besides convert the club into an impromptu photo studio for 2 chongas. You know what I mean, when girls ask for like 30 photos in a row...)

- He's drunk. (OK you got me there. But pot, kettle, black, you're probably drunk too or just hoovered a fat line of the Bolivian marching powder...)

- He's always angry. (I probably just got to the club and haven't had a drink yet)

- He never takes a photo of me. (You just have to ask...I work in reverse.)

- He took a lot of photos of the DJ and club owner. (One of the two are paying me.)

I am encouraged to get shots like this by venue owners/managers/hosts... granted permission by the subject, they will go up. Mind you more often than not it's the subjects choice and idea for these sort of shots, of course some harmless encouragement helps
