I think that flash should be used in every way possible, as long as it turns out great shots. Nightlife photography is one of a kind, perhaps the most artificial of them all. Light trails, strobes, 2nd curtain flash, it's all kinda 'fake', but it contributes to the general feel of clubs & nightlife in whole, which is all about fun & excitement. Just my 2 cents

I tend to look at it as an offshoot of photojournalism. If I need flash to expose the subject, so be it. Flash does have it's uses, and there's a reason we've all spent money on our 580s, STs, and so on. Sometimes it's just really that dark, and if busting out the flash lets you get the shot, so be it. Also, sometimes the light tech is asleep at the wheel.
But conversely, it's a hell of a lot of fun to use what's there. It's fun to play around with the intelligent lighting and ambient when possible.
