wow, super low ceilings! I like the first one. Firing the flash up on the last few? equipment and settings/EXIF?

#4 + #5 - subject is out of focus, looks like the A/C unit is in focus, and you have some out of focus heads floating in the foreground, which is distracting. It looks like whomever you were trying to shoot over absorbed most or all of your flash. Also, don't like the back-side shot of the subjects in #4.

#6+#7 - don't or try not to cut off limbs. Sometimes you have no choice, but if you can, take several shots of the people to try to get the right angle. I usually try to get two shots. Any more than 10 seconds of someone's time and they usually get perturbed.

Anyone have any advice for shooting in a dark bar? i dont have any flashes other than the OCF, which i really dont want to use. Should i just bump the ISO and shoot at a lower aperture? I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 10mm 2.8 to work with.

Jack - we've been discussing this over the last few pages. In the bars and clubs I go to it is not practical to shoot without a flash however your idea of dark to my idea of it. Others can manage without a flash at shutter speeds that prevent motion blur.

My advise is to beg, borrow, steal, rent or buy a flash (with focal assist).

that isnt the news i wanted to hear! haha. I invested my money into studio lighting, and come to find out i hardly ever use the studio lights. Would have been much better off buying some speedlites. I guess ill have to make due with the OCF for now.

Get a used 430exii.. you might have to stretch the wallet a bit, but in order to get the shots that you want (or need) so you can get paid, you should have the right equipment.

Hey guys been reading through this forum for a fair while now, amazing stuff in here :)

I was thinking about buying a yongnuo YN 560 and using it off camera.

I was wondering if it would be possible to mount my 270EX to the hotshoe, connect the YN 560 with a PC sync cable to my canon 1000D and hold it out to the side so my photos don't look so flat.

Has anyone tried this with flashes?

It is possible right? To mount one flash to the hotshoe and the other from the PC sync cable?

There is no wallet to stretch at the moment. Plus its really no biggie. Im getting paid $50 (plus free drinks) to cover a 4+ hour event for a friend that i would have probably been at regardless.

You only need one speedlight. In fact I started out using a sigma 500 super until I got my 580exII. I will say you would never be able to tell the difference between the shots I made with the sigma and the shots I made with the 580. Point being you don't need to go out and buy a 500 dollar flash. Get something decent in the 100 to 200 range, use an cord and either handhold it or put it on a bracket (you can get one for under 30 bucks, in fact the one I use is about 25-30 bucks, bought it off ebay years ago, liked it so much I got another one for backup). and a modifier like the lumiquest pocket bounce (great for low ceiling places as well).

I've gone through this entire thread looking at pictures and EXIFS seeing how I can improve my shots but I'm still a bit unsure about the shutter drag with the flash. If I shoot in manual mode on the body and ETTL on the flash, should the exposure (not flash exposure) be at 0, underexposed, or overexposed?
