In nightlife you won't see the difference if you use first or second curtain flash. It's also a misunderstanding that you can use longer shutter speeds with second curtain. Imo it's better to use first sync flash so you can time the moment you want to capture and not half a second later.

+1 to that.

Agree and disagree at the same time. I much prefer using RCS with a 'posed' shot. Over half of my shots will be like this, and I just prefer making sure they're the ones who are lit up properly.

If I'm in a crowd however where people are moving around, I think I'd be more inclined to use first curtain.

Anyways... This club is kinda ghetto... but its like the best club we have in birmingham, Alabama. I have grown to love Night life photography so much and I see what amazing work everyone on here does, and I just want to grow more and more in it. Chris and Shea have been great mentors, so I will be moving to chicago in the next 2 months.... to grow more in this type of photography!

If you do that with long shutter speeds (half second and longer) people will move because they think you've taken the picture because of the preflash (of your ttl metering). The result is that you will have taken the picture while they are moving.
That's why I would also recommend first curtain sync.

They don't.

Hey everyone!
So i've been doing night club videography for awhile now and im taking on photo gigs. I have a T2i so i have a crop sensor. I was wondering what everyone's favorite lens is for their crop sensor camera for night clubs.

10-20(ish)mm or 17-50(ish)mm, depends on how busy the club you're working is.

Edit: I swear by the 10-20 beacuse the clubs I shoot are generally rammed to capacity. All the lenses in the 10-20mm range are optically good lenses.

Maybe with you they don't, but with me it's a constant struggle for attention afterwards.

Anyone here use the Gary Fong Lightsphere while shooting in the club and if so are you shooting ETTL or Manual?

No Fong. Just a Stofen, which I remove when there are low ceilings.

For flash, ETTL with + flash compensation for head to feet group shots when in landscape orientation.

It's flooded with a bunch of amateurs who are willing to work for free (entrance to the events/clubs/etc), so they've completely ruined the market here if you actually want to make money.

The 'big' promoters have gotten away with paying their event photographers next to nothing, so when someone like me comes along who actually produces quality work, they turn me away when I ask to be paid what I'm worth because they can find a 16 year who will do it for free.

It's really stupid.

EDIT: Even when I was shooting EVERY weekend (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night), I wouldn't make more than 300-350 IN A MONTH. It was pathetic. Kinda why I stopped doing it. I can make triple that shooting a single wedding.

I agree with this 100%. The pre-flash throws them off every time. If Lonz has never ONCE had to deal with that, then that's cool...but 'normal' people go about their business after they see the first flash...especially when they're drunk.

The most efficient light modifier (for nightclub work as well as a few others) I've seen or used is the lumiquest pocket bouncer.

It's not that it never happens and I have literally no idea what you're all on about, it's that it's never been a massive problem for me. Maybe one or two people do it per night, and they know there are "two flashes, guys!" by now. It has it's place.

I've ran into the issue of people moving during the preflash so I shoot in first curtain all the time now.

I've also grown quite fond of this venue paired with my 85 1.8

Here's Nero in Calgary last saturday
