The most efficient light modifier (for nightclub work as well as a few others) I've seen or used is the lumiquest pocket bouncer.
what about when you take a photo in the portrait position?

Most of my photos are taken in the portrait position. I normally use a bracket but if you don't you can turn the flash sideways and put the pocket bouncer on just as easily. There was a Photog from Chi-Town, really cool guy and he was shooting with the GF Lighsphere. He told me I should be using mine and not the ProMax Ultrasoft Bounce. He was shooting on camera flash ETTL and I was shooting off camera flash manual. My settings were: Flash power 1/4-1/8, ISO 500-800,Fstop 4.0-5.6, Spot metering, SS anywhere from 1/10-1/60 sec. It seemed to me he had to be upclose to his subject to get good lighting where as I did not. So I too feel the LumiQuest ProMax Ultrasoft Bounce is somewhat better. Anyone else care to weighin on this? This is my 3 time shooting in a club so I'm still learning. The problem with the fong dongs, and some of the other light modifiers, is that they don't really throw as much light forward as the lumiquest. You can just look at them and see that. You can just look at them and see that. I normally use ettl with my lumiquest but occasionally will fire in manual. My normal settings are 1/15 - 1/4 or slower (I will sometimes go faster if the lighting calls for it but rarely), spot metering, ISO 400 to 800, and aperture anywhere from 2.8 to 5.6, If I am using the flash on manual then it is normally set at 1/4 power to 1/8 (same as you)... you can get away with the lower setting using the lumiquest. With the sphere or just a bounce card you have to either fire closer to max power, really bump up your iso and open up your aperture, or get much closer. I used to post on the old thread but I don't get out much anymore, not a whole lot of excitement going down here where I am and I don't shoot unless I'm being paid (and most places here are happy with crappy p&s shots and I do mean crappy). Here are a few older ones (exif should be intact): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks, I know what you mean about crappy photos. There is a guy that works the same club and people will pay $5.00 for a crappy looking 4X6 from him. He is shooting with the GF Lightsphere, No top on it with a 15 foot black ceiling. He's been shooting long than me. I'll try shooting ETTL this friday. I wanted to post pics but for some reason my flickr images won't show up on here. The only problem with ettl is sometimes the flash is too strong or too weak. Doesn't happen often but I feel I need to warn you that it is a possibility. The benefit of course is you don't have to keep an eye on your aperture and/or iso settings as much as if you are shooting manual flash. Jul 20, 2011 16:46 | #2083 If you have cash to blow on a Gary Fong soup bowl, consider spending the money on something that will actually help improve your pictures. I strongly recommend a colour calibration device for your monitor. The difference is better pictures in the end.
