I've been having some trouble with my flash last 2 - 3 days... lots of times it doesn't fire, others its shooting waaaaay to much power (shoting TTL, as I have been for the last couple of months) and a couple of times in between those it works like its supposed to...
anyone had similar problems before? tips on what I should check / fix / clean?

Check the contacts. Clean them with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Check the contacts on your camera as well. If that doesn't help, sounds like you may have loose electronics internally. Only fix for that is sending it in or buying a new one. :\

I'm afraid its internal... been messing around a bit with the flash this afternoon and even when using the TEST button (when the flash is loaded) it doesn't always fire...

hmmm, I never use rechargeable ones, just cheap normal ones, they're 1€ for 4 batteries = 1€ per night... just bought some alcohol though, will try to clean everything... a friend is letting me use her 580 tonight, so I can double check its my flash and nothing from the camera...

Check the shoe on the camera and make sure it is clean and tight. There are screws under a removable cover.

After seeing Gambit's flash cord, I'm tempted to try some off-camera flash. A cord certainly looks cheaper than a wireless set-up, but then again, I can use a two flash set-up if I get a wireless transmitter, no? I'm thinking that would be useful for DJ shots in particular...

you can also use a 2 flash setup without a cord or transmitter, especially with speedlites, as they talk to each other,

but yeah I went for the cheap option of the cord, searched on the net for aaages, to find a decent quality one for £11. ETTLII compatible. the only thing I would suggest is to buy 2, and link them, because I find 1 isnt quite long enough to get some shots
