pod_canon:No AF assist is a deal breaker. But then again, it's only compatible with the new flashes, and I am assuming to cater to the new 5dmk3 which supposedly has a better AF system. So maybe an AF assist beam wasn't deemed necessary.
I rely heavily on the AF assist beam, which is primarily why i shoot with two flashes. I could never align the AF beam when i had one flash handheld off camera.
Yes. I shoot with the ST-E2 and when I need flash I pull my 580 out of my back pocket. The 5D MK II has a middling-to-poor AF system so the beam is almost essential in the dark.
However, in another thread in this forum, one of the users surmised kind of what you did, that the AF beam was deemed unnecessary since the 5D MK III is supposed to have a superb AF system.
A friend of mine pre-ordered his MK III today, so I'll be able to give it the "club test" by month's end. Hopefully during Music Conference since we're shooting some of the same events.
