Done with a T1i, kit lens and 430EX, but I'm thinking about getting a Sigma 17-50 2.8 as soon as I get the money. Any thoughts?

Nicely done!
This shows its not all about the camera, it's the photographer that brings out the photos. The Sigma you mentioned is nice, with f/2.8 constant you will be able bring more light in.

How do people land these bookings? Applying or just word of mouth?

Here's a few from last week:

Can anyone recommend a good online service for storing and backing up your original RAW files? I was going to be an external hard drive for my originals but I've had one too many fail on me in the past and I'd feel more secure going with an online system like Mozy or Carbonite, etc.

Just wondering if anyone recommends a certain vendor.

Thanks!

Any more suggestions?

TechnoKelvin: I use Carbonite. It works perfectly. I setup the folders to sync, and the app runs in the background doing all the important work.

That and a separate drive running TimeMachine, and you are good to go.

WMC and ULTRA are coming up starting next week... Whos going?!?! :D.. I was only able to get booked for some WMC events, sadly wont be photographing at Ultra this year do to a prior commitment, but will be there from the 15th-22nd of March, would be nice to meet and maybe party with a few of the POTN nighlife members. Anyone up for drinks in the day?

I live in Miami so I'm always around. I'm with my usual people (Space and the Go Big Pool Parties) all week, so that's where I'll be at.

As far as missing Ultra, it's really no big deal, there's so many other (in my opinion) more interesting events going on throughout the week. Ultra is good as a showcase but the performers save their real efforts for their club gigs. Case in point, someone like Loco Dice will play for 90 minutes in the afternoon at some tent at the festival, but he'll play for 14 hours at Space.

As for getting booked for Conference parties? I've found in my experience (not counting local shooters like myself) that most of the out-of-town guys usually work for a big publication or for one of the big club-photo websites that shall not be named

It's only a week out, so if any of you guys are coming down, my advice is to get your access sorted within the next few days. I can tell you from experience that the clubs and host venues will not be able to sort any issues with media on the day of the show itself.

pretty urgent advice needed here:

Has anyone ever shot at a UV PAINT event??? yes I did say paint... this is an event in a club that's going to have paint cannons, pistols etc etc...

how would one go about protecting the camera from getting covered in paint??

I have an underwater case but it's not much use in a club as it doesn't have space for a flash.. and you dont have much control of the lens. or any functions tbh..

I'm thinking of just covering the main parts in cling film?

helppp

I had one of those protective rubber skins on my 40D, hood on my lens, a waistband around my flash (the LCD part) but for the most part, you have to keep your eyes open big time. There's a time in which it counts down to when the cannons fire the stuff on the crowd. Wait a bit till everyone is nice and soaked and THEN go in for some shots. I did one a few years ago and well, although my camera was fine, my clothes were another story. I did not come out with as many shots as I would have liked but given the environment, I did the best that I could;)

Good luck! Let us know how it went:D

Should your camera not be water sealed anyway?

yeah it's weather sealed.. but that won';t stop UV paint getting in all the impossible to reach places

Firstly thanks for the info, helped a lot.
night was great, I cut up a clear plastic freezer bag and taped it to the lens hood then cling wrapped the flash, and other areas of concern.
the paint itself was fired from constant high pressure pistols so it was more like a hose than a one shot cannon.
the guys running the paint were really great, I introducxed myself and they made sure there was no paint coming my way the whole night.
punters on the other hand would do anything to try and get me covered in paint.. THAT is what you need to look out for!! but all in all I got away paint free :)

will post some shots up later
