A very pretty girl yes, but I do not know what make-up she had on, but it really reflected the light back. Love that part of the bar for the background. Changes colour every now and again as well.

okay my question is this, how do you get such an ambient background? I know this guy shoots a 5D3, not sure what lens/flash, is this from a decently long shutter and boosted iso? I cant seem to reproduce even close to this amount of ambient without getting ghosts and likely horrible noise with my 50D... I want a 5d2/3 so badly ;'( how is noise control/boosting with the 5d2 compared to the 5d3?

Generally I shoot around ISO6400 or 3200 with f4-5.6 and a SS varying between 1/30(strobes) and 1/5.
I tend to try meter around one stop under..adjusting ISO/f/SS to get it to where I want and shoot ha.

For somewhere with strobing lights, I try to kind of match the speed of the strobes to my SS to try catch a single burst from them if that makes sense?

Knock up your ISO...I think after a little NR in lightroom, you will be quite happy with the results even on a 50D at 1024px.

Oh - and you may struggle with a 28mm on a crop for group shots. I used a 12-20mm sigma on a crop before and know people who used the 10-24mm tokina on one.

Has a quick look at your flickr (noticed you added me last week but didnt put two and two together! sorry).
Think you may actually be getting too much ambient and not enough flash...leading to the ghosting:

This is one of yours right? If so, boost the ISO another stop, half the shutter speed and move the flash up a stop. May help rid the ghosting issue.

haha yeah, you could say I did a bit of editing on that one :X exif shows iso 400 / 1/5 f2.8, that was with the built in flash too btw... such a pain in the arse to get it to AF lol... I now have a 430exii/stofen diffuser that I am using and I plan on getting something quite a bit wider, either 17-35/17-40 or a 10-2x (non canon since I want to upgrade to FF in the not so distant future, drooling over a 5D2) the 28-135 is certainly a struggle, I may be going out tonight(definitely tomorrow) to shoot and I will be using my sisters little 18-55, hopefully I get achieve better results this time.

it scares me to boost ISO on the 50D, the noise is absolutely terrifying and I dont like NR too much, it softens the photos so much, but I guess for nightlife it wont be the end of the world.. Are you using M on the flash or ettl ? I feel like the ettl seems to work pretty well, but i'm a noob so it makes it easy hah

seems as though I actually darkened their faces in the process of editing haha.. whoops

it sort of makes sense by matching the strobes.. do you just fire off a bunch of photos until you see what its synching at?

There is a link to a shot by someone at 3200 on the 50D with a 1024px. Most people do not mind a bit of the old NR skin softening when it comes to nightlife I think.

I kinda judge how quickly they fire...and guess. Dont be afraid to take 2-3 shots of a punter till its right I guess. Usually just say "one more guys" and they are happy 95% of the time.

The strobes in a dark room can be a real pain...blowing out some shots if you time the release wrongly or you can just plain miss the strobe and have a black background. Takes a bit of practice to get the right shutter speed and to release the shutter at the right time to catch the strobe flashing once at the same time as your exposure (or as close as).

Oh and maybe watch the composition a little. Would have filled the frame a little more with those guys...eyes in the top third kinda thing.

ETTL is a god send I think. With the 430ex ii it seems to be fairly good at guessing what my subject is that I am interested in. EETL, no High speed sync, first curtain. Usually have it off camera.
Editing is pretty slick though :P. Didnt notice the cheeky addition of fake ambient much ha.

Ha I have to agree. Srika always seems to be that level higher! A little jealous, but at least its something to aim for over the years.

oh man, I read the first part quick and thought you were saying you were really moving to Chicago! haha. alright well I'll keep posting those so you'll want to move! I'll double my efforts.
