No problem. Well looks like you nailed it first go to be honest!
If you feel you can not get more ambient in, just keep adding to your shutter till its about a stop under exposed. I vary depending on situation between 1/40 and 1/2 of a second for the "normal" shots. Just depends where I am facing in the bar essentially. Yeah the 430ex ii is a beauty, consider maybe an off shoe cord on your next trip?
Oh and an added bonus of high ISO is for every stop, you use half the flash battery power. I reel off maye 500 shots on ISO3200-6400 before I need to swap them sometimes.
One last thing I'd think and you'll be basically there (it is one I kick myself for as well...working on it!) is composition. A little much headspace on some of them...the guys on the sofa could have been framed a little tighter with heads in the upper 1/3 and maybe the group of girls could have a little less framing above theirs as well. Personal opinion though.
thanks
I have definitely learned a lot, you guys are all a major inspiration for me!!
Not sure I feel comfortable shooting at 6400 with the noise I am getting at 3200, I haven't hit h1/h2 on my camera yet. ill try that next time though and see what kind of results I get(5d3 is far superior in that category for sure!! I am dreaming of the day! haha, I do want a 5D2 pretty badly though
but clearly its not the end of the world, I am seeing people put out worse quality with far better gear than me.) When the time comes, should I see far better IQ and noise control with a 5D2 / 17-40 f4? (at least that is my intended setup, can't afford a 16-35, but would consider a 17-35 if one comes around for the right price. I am on a strictly used gear budget
)
Red part I dont quite understand. 1/2 seems to work fine, but 1/40 I think would be too little light in the conditions I was in(maybe bumping up a stop in iso would help that, I was at 2500-3200 last night). I'm assuming you are metering for the background under these settings and letting the flash take care of the subject(and dial it in with exposure comp on flash in camera as well) Right now i'm still a little fiddly with it since it tends to be pretty fast paced but i'm learning and taking as many shots as I can.
Also for the sync cord, I can see how that would help but sometimes even with it going from 45 degrees to 60 or further I can get pretty drastic changes in subject fill. I am currently using a stofen diffuser and generally try to get it around 45 to 60 depending on angles. I tried bouncing the ceiling a few times and that ended pretty awful(don't think it works too well on black ceilings haha) I haven't seen anyone with a cable or L bracket at the clubs i've been in yet so I haven't been able to talk to anyone about it in person.
