So this was my feeble attempt at long exposure shos with the blurs all around them like havik, shea, and christopher are able to achieve...only thing is... Mine didnt turn out so well haha

I tried shooting it in 1st curtain, with an offcord ttl cord. If you would mind havik, maybe PM'ing me and sharing a few tip shaha i can NOT get the damn thing down! =[Maybe i need 2 flahes im guessing... anyhow...

You don't know how?!?!?!
It's like the first thing I learned when I started!

For those blurs that you're mentioning, you should already know that it's basically the light that's hitting the subject, controlled camera shake creates the art!
Your ISO and shutter combined needs to be just correct so your camera captures the light that's being bounced off your subject from ambient light, such as the strobes in the club or continuous lights.
That's how you drag the light.
Practice, and you'll get what you're looking for!!!

The way I do it, I have the flash mounted on the hotshoe, and 1st curtain, twist camera/shake camera when taking picture. 2 flashes are too much of a hassle for me!

Here's some of mine. I don't aim for the complete blur all around, as that's not my personal style. I'm more into the light trails, and dragged lights shots.

IMAGE: http://i35.tinypic.com/95wjo5.jpg

Someone stuck their hand in the way for the duration of the flash, however my shutter speed was long enough so it allowed the ambient light from the club's lighting to reach my camera.
Which as a result leads to this!

what day exactly? Cause half the time its only BARDOT open, and then avalon (unless its some special night for some reason)
other than that ya, avalon gots those big ceilings lol

Sorry, forgot to reply. Its this Wednesday at 10pm for the USC welcome back party. I remember they have very high ceilings. How would you guys go about getting good flash shots with these dark and high ceilings? I'm assuming bouncing won't work, so I'm thinking about attaching a white index card to reflect the flash towards the people.

I figured after my birthday, it would be a good chance to change up what I do a bit.

I changed the gallery template so it looks better, as well as giving you keyboard navigation so you don't need to use a mouse to see the pics.

Also started shooting in all RAW. Adds a few hours of processing time now, but it's worth it in the end I think. I would rather work on less than 50 really good pics in a few hours, then put up 100 OK pics in an hour.

Anyway, here's my first gallery:

Most of my pics still look the same as my older stuff. Did you look in the gallery at all, or did you just look at the 3 examples?

I just am getting pretty annoyed of having 50 pics of the same DJ with the same pink lighting, looks too repetative.

Oh? Is it not the same thing? LOL

It's just the ambient hits the subject long enough for you to twist your camera in a circle, is it not?

I'll see if I can do some for you this coming saturday to see if it's as hard as you say! :P

One from last night. The reason for the square crop is that it is a 2 shot photo merge.

I find it really difficult to achieve focus in the dark club environment. Is there a special trick I should employ? Or is that special trick a Canon flash (on camera --- focus infrared grid).

I have the same issue.
this article (external link) talks about an ST-E2 to send a focus beam, and Pocket wizards connected to PC-sync.
BUT is to expensive to me.. (for now)

Since PocketWizard are to expensive, and I only have Cactus V4 (only manual) with 430EX II, I'll probably buy an ST-E2, and hack my flash unit to connect it to PC-sync (want TTL).
