well I think on the 7D it just works better with RAW, at the higher ISO's. I'm looking at the JPG's and there is just a lot of bad noise. and, the RAW's are 21-25mb in size. the JPG's are right around 6mb. That makes it pretty clear, the RAW's are just better for the NR needed for high ISO work. the JPG's were still usable, but I will be shooting in RAW from now on.

show was great Shea, best set I've heard from him in a while - he had a few years there were it just didn't do it for me. but it got way too hot and I had to leave at 2.

eh not really "of course", I mean I regularly shot the 50 on the 5d at the clubs with no problems - its just tough to get "certain" shots :D

It's almost like velcro and a DIY foam ABBC.

I rather stick to my DIY foam ABBC.
Works wonderfully and it's not obstructive!

I snicker at people in the clubs using the lightsphere on their flash firing near 1/1 pops every photo.
I don't know why. Don't flame me. :(

Not at those prices. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives.

Alright, here's some more photos as promised from the DJ Marky evening.

Like some of the other posters mentioned, taking photos outside in the smoke pit always produce some interesting images. This one is of a guy I always grab a photo of at EVERY show I've been to. He wants me to do a photobook for him at the end of the year :D

Last but not least..this is epic. I've never seen any DJ in the past 10 years do this in Calgary. So glad I have my camera ready to go!

ok so:
I finally got my introverted, larger-than-most ass into a club friday night...
There was a photographer there, but in all honesty
I think he was shooting an ungripped nikon d40 and kit lens with a cheap-o tiny external flash (which I don't think was even turned on...) This experience gave me some hope that I would be able to get into some nightlife work (not neciscarrily there, it was Bar Charlotte in Charlotte NC [about a 3 hour drive for me, one way]) but still I could find work with my set up (maybe a rental here or there). My question is: how did ya'll originally approach someone when you were first starting? Did you take a camera with you when you went to the bar to get some pics to show someone or did you walk in and say "hey, can I give this a go!?"
or something totally different?!
thanks guys! I have been creepin around here for probably 100 pages now... and it just keeps getting better

I was introduced to it by a close friend of mine who is a local DJ/producer. At the time I was asked, the scene was starting to grow and the shows were in small pubs around the city. He knew I had a camera and asked if I wanted to come try and grab some photos. I didn't have the faintest idea how to shoot clubs or dj events so I read 300-400 pages on the old thread and gave it a go. I was hooked.

I have found that to get your foot in the door, atleast for me and YMMV but knowing someone in the scene/club/promotions works best. This niche is more about who you know more then anything, obviously a style the promoter likes and consistency is the key to keeping jobs and gaining more but knowing someone will help get your foot in the door. I'm not sure about the other club shooters that post here, but thats my experience.

To be honest, before I got my first gig I had never set foot into a club before. I really wanted to start working with DJs and move onto concerts.. So I started planning and decided to work with a club, I called two places.. They both had me form emails to them.
I got a call back from Providence and the manager at the time asked me to come in to speak with him, I explained that I was a sports photographer, and that I also did a little bit of editorial. He liked my sports work so he had me come in the next day to see whats up and the rest is history..

Now I am trying to find other clubs/bars and I want to start shooting concerts now, so I am just looking around for numbers and email addresses.

Sounds like a card error.
