I wouldn't bother, its too dark for the camera to focus properly without the IR light from a flash gun

Learn how to use OCF. I did, and its amazing. The first time I saw an image frozen using a half second shutter speed it clicked for me.

Does anyone use their 7D to trigger their flash?

Sometimes, but is a pain in the a** to focus in darkness.

Yes.
If it is a long exposure and low light condition, the flash can freeze action, with some sharpness.

1st curtain:
Shutter opens, flash goes off, film/sensor is exposed, shutter closes

2nd curtain:
pre-flash goes off, shutter opens, film/sensor is exposed, actual flash goes off, shutter closes.

Panda - those are some really nice OCF shots. Are you using an ST-E2 or a radio trigger?

I'm using Cactus triggers. I find them much more reliable than the ST-E2. BTW, do you mind posting a comment on my blog SleazyMermaid?

I like those last two shots, Panda. Was the last one taken on the 17-40 and then cropped? If it was taken on the 17-40, I don't notice any distortion there.

when using ocf w/ triggers that don't do ttl what do you usually set your flash power to manually? do you find yourself changing flash settings constantly?

Irish, I don't think I cropped the image. It was either the 17-40 or 24L.

I set the ocf to the lowest power. once its strapped on stage, it's very difficult to get access, switch settings, and change batteries. Keeping at the lowest power garantees the flash lasts all night, and exposes some ambience as well without completely over exposing the dj
