It really isn't, but even if it was, I wouldn't care since I don't sweat the noise. Embrace the noise and work with it, ya know? It'll be awhile before we get butter-smooth ISO 6400 so in the meantime, work with what you got. The best camera is the one you have. I still have a 50D and while I do play with NR on occasion, often I'll just let it ride. My stuff

Feb 28, 2011 21:12 | #1452 Thanks. That particular one was cropped only iirc. That one I believe came out the best straight out of the camera. I was impressed by it when I viewed it on the 1.5" display. My only peeve of my camera -Chris

My only peeve of my camera I just selected one of your shots to put in the quote. I wasn't specifying that one in particular. I've looked at all your shots and I'm asking more about lens / lighting / iso in general so that the pictures look light balanced.

True. I look for any opportunity to tell a story or comment But coming from a film background, I'm used to what today's up-and-comers would consider "horrid" noise. ISO 400 on Fuji film: And on a beat up scanner that was already old when I got it. I'm not sure what the native ISO of the scan head was, but it couldn't have been anything spectacular. The Dimage Duo. SCSI. Eeek. It took hours to get it to work. And about half a day to scan an evening's "take". Also, a quirk with the Windows NT drivers that Minolta never fixed meant that the scanner just dropped off of the SCSI chain about once a day and required a full system reboot. Let's go make lunch. Oh, and no ICE dust removal. And I lived in an old apt where my roommate had a cat, i.e. lots of airborne particulates. I hated editing. Odd thing is, I didn't document my ISO anywhere. I just shot 400 95 percent of the time and memorized beats, songs, and lighting cues. And kindly had lighting set up for me. That was "great" to me and still holds water for something I shot in 2000. Noise-wise in a digital sense, that's like 3200 on today's DSLR. So we've come a long way. In the interim, I tell everyone (a lot!) to use those high ISOs and live dangerously. If getting the shot means living at 6400, rock on, and don't let the chumps tell you otherwise. This poor kid in Miami, he asks me "how did you get the shot?" all the time, and I just tell him to live dangerously and use higher ISOs, and he claims his clients will yell at him. Well, I've seen his clients, and they're not the sort to whine about noise. He's just afraid of it. That controller photo is pretty cool, no matter what ISO. It's more about the light itself than then precise pixel-level detail. You saw it, you shot it, boom. You could probably market it and others like it to Novation as "action shots". I like to think as photographers allowed inside of nightclubs, for the most part, we're more there to document things as they appear, than to be photo-illustrators or studio guys. I don't mind a little PP and color correction, but after a fashion, it does cross a line in my head. Like, you wouldn't PP the image of the Marines planting the flag on Iwo Jima just because the Marines' uniforms weren't the right olive drab. Like, it's not a reason to shoot on "green" and blaze away, but I think nightclubs are a great arena to see just what today's DSLRs are capable of. Canon should be on here and over on your board too picking our brains and asking for RAW samples. I think after they are done with us, they'd comp us a 5D MK II a piece! My stuff
