Recently ordered my Canon EOS Rebel XS and am deciding what I should buy with it.
It comes with a carrying bag, memory card, and spare battery ...
But what else should I invest in?

Wow, thats a HUGELY broad question... How about we start with how much more money do you have to spend and what type of things will you be photographing?

Erm my bad lol.
Well, I would be taking shots that involve light-painting and long exposures, etc.
And maybe some macro shots later on.

I'm just looking for what is recommended for a beginner.

use it, and if you feel that you're missing something, buy it.

i'd say a lenspen is a nice (and cheap) thing to have no matter what camera you have.

Ok, I'll look into one.
Is the Joby Gorilla pod a good one?

And also, what would I use to keep the shutter open for exposures longer than 30 seconds?

I would probably go with a real tripod.

This is a good one that is very popular and not crazy expensive

A remote switch. (external link)

Well for light painting and long exposures in general you will definitely need a tripod! A remote shutter release would help too. For macro you really should look into picking a dedicated 1:1 macro lens like one of the Canons or Sigmas.

gorillapods are great as tabletop tripods and to wrap them around things. for the long exposures you need for light painting, you'll want a real tripod where the legs lock and can't possible move.
