Here is the situation:

I want to upgrade to 70-200 f/4 IS from 70-200 f/4 before rebate expires in a couple of weeks.

Choices:
1) Adorama on ebay = $1130 - 8% bing = 1040

2) Adorama directly = $1130 but I can get 1 extra yr of warranty w/ Amex card

3) Local shop = $1392 + 9% tax = $1517

4) Used price: $900-$950 for a 1-3 yrs old lens with no warranty

Questions:
1) Is that 1yr warranty worth the extra $90? I have not heard of too many failures on this lens.
2) I really want to support my local dealer but the price is simply ridiculus. Local shop might be able to shave $100-200 by bargaining but the tax is really killing the deal.
3) Very hard to justify a saving of $100-150 by buying used. True?

i can only give my own personal opinion...

just ordered that very same lens yesterday, from B&H (no tax and free shipping)

convenience and piece of mind has a price for me.

i don't want to deal with bing cashback, i once tried to set it up, and their site horribly failed to activate my account, so i'm not going to bother anymore.

local shop; i just don't have the time to drive around with our work schedule, and daycare etc... shopping online and finding the package in front of your door is sooo convenient for me. not to mention that their pricing + tax + gas money will drive the price through the roof.

used: nothing wrong with used if you know that you're buying from someone who took care of the product. you just have to bee lucky that the item is for sale at the time you need it.
i've sold plenty of used things, and never had anyone complain about it (except when it got damaged by the shipper).

I bought a refurbished from Adorama for $999.99 with $30 Bing (not sure when it ends). They give a 1 year warranty on Canon refurbs through Adorama (they say they send them to Canon). They come into and out of stock quickly so check often. Can't tell mine from new. Arrived in a sealed box.
