my plan was to get a T1i then then save and get the 5DMKII, but then ya'll convinced me to get the T2i instead. but i was just messing around with my 20D the past couple nights at the house, it needs a major cleaning on the insides( my apartment burned down, and the camera with my 17-40L and 430EX flash were next to my tv, the tv was melted pretty good and the camera was completly black, needless to say i picked it up, blew it off and started taking pictures of the house fire, that thing is a tank and i will never leave canon), other than that it works great. i know it's not as new or strong as the T2i, but bottom line is i want the 5DMKII, but i was gonna get the T2i to tide me over until i can get the 5DMKII, but now i am thinking if it might be worth it to send the 20D to canon to get super cleaned and just use it, i am sure it won't cost as much as it would to get the T2i. so even if it cost say $200 would it still be worth it to fix it and save the rest for the 5D, and if so, what would you think the cut off price would be to where it just wouldn't be worth it, thanks guys

I think spending $200 to fix a 20D is throwing good money after bad. You can get a 30D for not much more than that. If you are going to invest that sort of money you ought to be gaining something.

$200 to fix the 20D? That doesn't really sound worth it to me.

You could probably sell it on here for $50-$100 for someone to use with the Loyalty program. Or sell it for ~$150 on here if it's still usable (but just dirty/beat-up). Or you could use it with the loyalty program yourself, and buy a 50D to resell. You've got a lot of options.

But I for one wouldn't bother repairing it/getting it cleaned for ~$200.

yeah beside the cleaning the lenses and flash are awsome cleaned off the body, look almost brand new.

i was just throwing $200 out there, i think i read on here somewhere that someone sent it in and it was only like $30 to get it cleaned i think, i am thinking by the time shipping and cleaning paid for i can hopefully get it done for around $100 or less, anything alot more than that i think i will look into something different

$200 is probably about 80% of the value of a working 20D. It's not worth it. But if it is still working properly, why not just keep it as is, or is there something functionally wrong with it?

I see it a little differently:

If you dig the 20D, and all it needs is a cleaning, I'd at least consider it. If nothing else, you've got a camera that has proven it can take much of what gets dished out in life, and it keeps on ticking. Hell, maybe even Canon would like to hear about it. "My Canon camera was in a fire, and it still works great!" kinda' thing.

I dunno'; just thinking out loud.

I think Canon's base fee for "we fix what's wrong with your crap!" for just generic parts and labor is around $140.

Personally I would pay $100 for a horribly beat up but functioning 20D.

You can call their support and they will offer you a newer model camera (I think 50D or the T2i at this point) for a discount if you send them your broken/antiquated DSLR.

That-Fox- nothing is wrong with it, just a very dirty sensor i can't get clean. if i have a dark background you can't see the pots, but let me take a pic outside and it is like it is snowing black snow or something. i have tried a static stick, a blower, i just can't get it clean.

TheBurningCrown- do you think the $140 is for cleaning to, because nothing is wrong with it, it just needs cleaning on the inside, other than that the body is a beast i mean it survived my house burning down and photographed the aftermath, maybe it's just sentimental to me then, probably kinda silly

If your 20D is still functioning and the only thing wrong with it is that's it a little dirty on the outside, then I would keep it and not bother sending it in. Fully functioning 20D bodies are going for $225-$350 these days so I don't see it being worthwhile sending it in even at the cost of a $100.

Have you tried a wet cleaning solution of some sort or sensor swabs? There are some users on the boards who have some experience using them that could give you some really good advice on how to effectively use them.

I agree, if it is just a very dirty sensor, this would be a good option.
